The Engineering Excellence team is responsible for the tools and processes that enable engineers at Paylocity to develop, deliver and observe code rapidly, safely and efficiently. This team owns build, CI/CD, observability tooling, Site Reliability Engineering and Incident Management. Principal Software Engineers play a vital role in shaping our products’ future through technical direction and being hands-on with our code. As a senior leader in the team, you will be involved in helping the organization solve complex engineering problems and have a direct impact in increasing developer velocity and operational efficiency. Responsibilities: + Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers on the team, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. + Architecture & Design: Design and implement highly scalable and reliable CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure, considering performance, security, and maintainability. + Platform Ownership: Take ownership of key components of our developer platform, driving their evolution and ensuring their stability and performance. + Operational Excellence: Contribute to SRE-like activities, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, and performance tuning of our CI/CD systems. + Collaboration: Work closely with other engineering teams (e.g., Observability, Incident Management, Internal Developer Platform Tools) to integrate and improve the overall developer experience. + Innovation: Research and evaluate new technologies and methodologies to continuously improve our developer platform and processes. + Best Practices: Champion and evangelize best practices for CI/CD, software development, and operational excellence across the organization. + Problem Solving: Lead the resolution of complex technical challenges and drive root cause analysis to prevent recurring issues. + Strategic Planning: Contribute to the long-term vision and strategy for the Developer Platforms team, aligning with the overall engineering goals. Qualifications: + Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a similar technical field. + Strong understanding of CI/CD principles, tools (e.g., TeamCity, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Octopus Deploy, Artifactory, Argo CD), and best practices. + Experience with cloud platforms (prefer AWS) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes). + Experience with SRE principles and practices, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, and performance tuning. + Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., C#, Go, Python, Java) and scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python). + Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. + Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues. + Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor other engineers. Preferred: + Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation). + Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef, Puppet). + Experience with security best practices in CI/CD.
