**About This Role**
**Carrier** is looking for talented and motivated principal investigators, systems engineers, and researchers who will be a part of Carrier’s Innovation Hub Americas, to enable the development of innovative and novel Energy technologies in HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration) applications. Innovation Hub Americas is in Syracuse, which is the North American center for Carrier’s product design and development, as well as groundbreaking innovative research. We ideate, design, verify and validate new products and technologies across Carrier’s global portfolio, supporting Carrier’s goal to be the global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.
This individual would focus on the development of controls and communication for novel energy management systems (EMS) in support of Carrier’s plan to develop the next generation of intelligent energy solutions. Their focus would be on systems engineering as relevant to electrical and/or control systems that enable electrification and energy management. They would be responsible for identifying, determining key performance criteria, characterizing, and evaluating systems and sub-systems to these criteria and leading/assisting a larger team of relevant subject matter experts with implementation into Carrier’s products.
This role would be part of an international network of experts focused on supporting Carrier’s global business. It will involve working with different internal groups, new suppliers and industries, as well as universities and consortiums to assist in identifying new research for consideration. Coordination of activities across disciplines within Carrier will also be necessary to ensure the proper application of these technologies and their implementation within Carrier’s products portfolio.
**Key Responsibilities**
+ Lead and drive the technical vision, as the principal investigator for innovative energy management systems’ controls, communication, and optimization.
+ Lead R&D efforts; exploring new technologies and tools, reviewing patents, journals, and publicly available data to synthesize technical feasibility, and propose strategies for EMS controls and optimization.
+ Own energy management controls and communication development, including software and controls algorithms, verification and validation, and compliance with standards and regulations, in collaboration with relevant experts.
+ Lead teams of multi-disciplinary subject matter experts focusing on technology development and delivery following Carrier specific processes and best practices.
+ Clearly articulate value of work conducted; proactively mitigate schedule risks and implement improvements.
+ Communicate with different stakeholders, including leadership, management, internal and external customers on plans, risks, and results, through both written and verbal channels.
+ Balance significant workload (lead and support multiple projects), propose priorities and readily shift activities to maximize impact.
+ Must be self-driven and capable of driving development projects autonomously, while gathering feedback from appropriate experts and stakeholders, and implementing continuous improvement processes.
+ Assist in the training and development of the EMS and wider Carrier team as relates to controls, communication, and optimization.
**Required Qualifications**
+ Master's degree in Electrical or Systems Engineering
+ 7+ years of relevant experience in research and development, or academic role, in controls, electrification or electrical engineering related to energy management systems.
+ 2+ years of experience in developing systems and components testing for technology performance demonstrations.
+ 2+ years of experience in serving as principal investigator or team lead.
+ 2+ years of experience with embedded and/or cloud software development
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ PhD in Electrical or Systems Engineering
+ Experience with technology development process, including NASA/ISO 16290 technology readiness levels (TRLs)
+ Demonstrated project completion/delivery as a project lead.
+ Familiarity with software development lifecycle, Agile methods, source control, and CI/CD for software development.
+ Familiarity with cloud computing concepts, including distributed computing platforms, API design and microservices architecture.
+ Expertise in basic software operation (Microsoft office) required, as well as familiarity with different online meeting tools and work environment.
+ Strong communication and influencing skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders and working with executive levels.
+ Familiarity with control standards for distributed energy resources, including IEEE 2030.5, OpenADR, etc.
+ Familiarity with next generation control strategies such as model predictive control, reinforcement learning, etc.
+ Familiarity with energy storage systems, electrical or others.
+ Familiarity with electrical systems, high voltage systems, both AC and/or DC.
+ Hands-on experience with AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure
+ Hands-on experience with modern analytics tools such as Spark, Polars, Pandas, etc.
+ Familiarity with electromechanical systems including heat exchangers, compressors, motors, structural elements, HVAC equipment and applications, or similar systems.
+ Experience in working with universities, consortia, external labs and/or start-ups, coordinating feasibility studies and evaluations through statements of work or joint development agreements.

**Pay Range:**
$109,456 - $191,938 Annually
