The Opportunity
In Arup, with ever more complex urban communities to serve, we see Intelligent Mobility and operational technology as central to any effective, future-facing transport system – we look beyond individual transport modes, to create more efficient and integrated networks, and meet greater social, economic and environmental goals through embracing new technology solutions and a richer data environment. Our work spans several key technical areas around which we base our service offering:-
Low emission mobility – looking at influencing alternative fuelling and public transit solutions Mobility Pricing – working across tolling and congestion charging solutions Shared, connected and autonomous mobility – to embrace solutions which promote multi-modal travel and Systems, Operation and Data – using transport systems to create more efficient, digitally enabled transportWe focus on bringing clarity to complex scenarios and enjoy working on innovative projects which adopt the latest technical advancements in a robust, risk-tolerant way. We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join our national Intelligent Mobility (IM) team to support the delivery of an expanding and exciting portfolio of transport technology projects across the UK and internationally.
Transport networks are increasingly data rich and technology enabled. Our clients are deploying technology solutions to better manage their networks, improve safety, reduce environmental impacts and better inform travellers. We work with them to advise on all aspects of transport technology systems, from strategy and business through to design and operation. Key areas of focus are systems & operations, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), signalling and urban traffic control, mobility pricing, smart ticketing, traffic control centres, and Connected & Autonomous Vehicles.
This role will work to support, at a senior level, the provision of technical advice and design services to deliver technology solutions for transport systems that balance the needs of the economy, the environment and society. The role includes assurance of quality and governance through proactive involvement in projects, leading their technical delivery and interfacing with internal and external stakeholders to deliver quality outputs for our clients. The position will involve collaborating with team members to design, specify, and develop innovative solutions within agreed timescales and budgets. Responsibilities will include technical delivery, data analysis, report writing, and contributing to business development. The role is expected to be client facing and to involve an element of work winning, so good communication skills to supplement an excellent technical ability will be fundamental.
From our UK based national team, we are also looking to service a range of overseas projects and, in particular, a growing portfolio of work in the UAE. Candidates should be prepared for international travel and should indicate whether a longer-term placement role overseas would be of interest to them.

Role Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership and support for existing Intelligent Mobility business clients through project delivery. Enhance Arup’s profile with key clients, including the Department for Transport (DfT), National Highways, international clients, and private-sector clients. Lead and ensure delivery of projects within agreed timescales and budgets, driving teams to deliver technical excellence. Contribute to a wide range of projects and bids across business areas and within the wider Arup network, including international opportunities. Ensure all designs and documentation meet the highest professional standards. Keep up to date with industry and technical developments and changes. Perform a variety of roles including strategic advice and technical consultancy. Working with the IM leadership team to develop and implement a work winning plan to create a case for team growth in the region.Requirements
Member of relevant professional institution(s). Chartered Engineer status or equivalent experience. Significant experience in systems and technology deployment, including ITS design. Able to apply a systems thinking approach to design and delivery. Ability to understand complex issues and capture client requirements.What We Offer you
