As a Principal Geotechnical Engineer - Open Pit Mining, you will be responsible for supporting, managing, and delivering  geotechnical focused aspects of mining projects. You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your field, providing expertise to lead and manage project teams effectively. The role requires the ability to build strong internal and external relationships to support the growth of Worley Consulting Geosciences mine geotechnical business.

What you’ll do

We’re looking for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer - Open Pit Mining based in either Perth or  Melbourne.

The role responsibilities include\:

Actively promotes and leads a culture of zero harm with a strong focus on safety in line with Worley Consulting business practices. Support and manage opportunities and projects through sound technical capabilities and efficient project management and also ensure that team and project members follow corporate safety, quality, business development, engineering procedures and processes as part of project delivery. You will be responsible for working across the following elements of a geotechnical project life cycle\: Strategy, optioneering and concept geotechnical designs. Planning, execution, supervision and management of field geotechnical investigations of open pit and underground mining projects/operations. Open pit mining operations. Execution and construction of open pit mining operations.  Be involved in all life stages of open pit mining operations, from desktop study to mine closure including execution, risk management and monitoring reflecting the life cycle.  Utilize a range of numerical modelling applications, such as RocScience software suite and the development of various inputs. Geotechnical interpretation and design using industry accepted and standard methodologies, and tools. Support the growth of our Geosciences business through sound project delivery and effective client engagement and also participate in business development initiatives (including identifying target opportunities/clients, client engagement and leading/managing proposal preparation). Establish and maintain good relationships with selected contractors, clients and other Worley Consulting/Worley Services personnel. A passion to grow the Mining Geotechnical and Rock Mechanics team within the APAC Worley Consulting Geosciences group through industry presence and team numbers. Express a strong desire to win and deliver quality projects and build a brand synonymous with quality, expertise, and positive economic outcomes for Clients. Strong technical leadership, embraces teamwork and collaboration as a key to delivery success and also a strong and unwavering commitment to quality. Provide mentoring and supervision to develop junior team members skills and knowledge and also to influence internal leadership and Clients on concepts, ideas, and direction for the success of the projects.

What you’ll have

Our Geosciences business is underwritten by technical excellence, and we are seeking a candidate who is able to show passion, innovation and curiosity in mining geotechnics and rock mechanics. Extensive experience in both mining operations and/or consultancy. Tertiary qualification related to geotechnical engineering or rock mechanics and a preference for recent publication history. Registration with appropriate professional institution(s). Effective project management skills, including the ability to plan, set goals, manage time, set priorities, allocate and manage resources, accountabilities, and budget. The potential for impactful business development skills, including expanding/managing/supporting existing client relationships and winning work for our Geosciences business.  Experience in the study, design and operations of open pit mines. Experience in metalliferous mines and a variety of mining methods is valued.  Effective presentation, verbal and written communication skills including conveying information and ideas to individuals and group.  Wide-ranging understanding and experience in developing geotechnical models and inputs, covering rockmass and structural characterisation, domaining and material properties. Experience in Bentley Leapfrog modelling is valued. Experience in numerical modelling applications like RocScience, suite of software, Map3D, and FLAC3D. Demonstrated experience in the preparation, compilation and writing of geotechnical reports (factual, interpretive and design), desktop assessments, proposals, estimates, specifications, scopes of work and bills of quantities in accordance with appropriate standards. Demonstrated (or the potential for) experience in supporting site construction activities.  The ability to travel locally and internationally to project sites, as required. Full working rights in Australia and an unrestricted Australian driver’s license.
