The role of the Principal Product Definition Engineer is to analyze customer requirements, create full application solutions and specify new integrated circuits products which deliver compelling value to our customers. In the process of specifying new integrated circuits, the Senior Systems Engineer will use advanced simulation techniques to develop algorithms and prototype circuits on the bench.Development of compelling IC-based solutions for switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) off-line and Automotive applications by analysis of market-driven requirements.Specification of PI’s IC products as high value components in our SMPS designs.Champion the growth and expansion of Power Integrations’ high voltage AC-DC power conversion ICs. Providing direction and support to the sales force on new and current AC-DC products (including marketing communications, product training presentations, price list generation, and special pricing).Monitoring and driving key customer opportunities to ensure success.Understanding competitive product/technology threats to form defensive product strategies.Understanding customer/market requirements and opportunities for new products/packages through customer visits ResponsibilitiesReview and analysis of customer-driven requirements for SMPS.Development of compelling IC-based system solutions by analysis of market-driven requirements. Specification of new IC products as high value components in application designs.Invention of patentable intellectual property in PI’s application designs and ICs to protect our market position.Leadership in the technical feasibility study which will be part of any new IC development by validating new topology and product ideas using modern simulation tools and discrete emulation of circuits prior to actual IC design.Support to the IC design team to ensure the IC implementation meets system requirements.Review and approval of the IC design prior tape-out.Active participation in design verification testing and characterization of first sample ICs in the lab.Support to the applications team to facilitate acceptance and design-in of PI IC products.Qualifications and experience:Qualified to degree level in electronics or electrical engineering with strong analytical skills.15+ years of hands-on experience specifying and developing SMPS, ideally with IC implementation.Experience of working on new product introduction programs within a structured process framework.A track record of successfully delivering cost effective power conversion solutions for volume production.Work based competencies:Successful track record in the design of off-line SMPS, preferably in 50W-3kW power range.Broad and deep understanding of power conversion for off-line (85-477VAC) and high voltage DC (400-1kV) use.Appreciation of cost/performance trade-offs in SMPS design for cost-sensitive, high-volume applications.Thorough magnetics design knowledge and experience.Control Loop theory and practice in the context of switch-mode power supplies.Good understanding of international EMC and electrical safety regulations and circuit techniques to achieve compliance at minimal BOM cost.Proficiency with software tools such as MatLab, Mathcad, Simplis/SiMetrix.Knowledge of Printed Circuit Board design.First rate practical bench skills and confident user of lab equipmentExcellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively across multiple audiences both internal and external at Power IntegrationsAbility to accept ideas from others and have an open mind towards new application and product ideas.Demonstrated ability to write accurate and concise technical documentation including bench evaluations and simulation results. The annual base pay range for this position is $183,365 - $263,639. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, qualifications and work location. The range displayed on the job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position in California. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
