The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 56 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated organization engineering organization. WRPS was identified as "One of America's Safest Companies" in 2020; and was the recipient of the 2021 "Employer of the Year" by the Association of Washington Businesses. The Closure and Interim Measures Project Engineer will have responsibility and be an engineering lead for the planning, performance, and reporting of engineering evaluations associated with facility closure and correction actions for soil contamination, tank waste residuals, and contaminated equipment in tank farm areas. They will provide technical input to baseline planning for vadose zone characterization and for design and implementation of vadose zone corrective actions. The successful candidate will: * Support the definition, design, and implementation of interim and final corrective actions for soils and for tank farm and ancillary equipment retrieval and closure. * Support the definition of strategies to achieve single-shell and double-shell tank closure. Develop technical plans and reports, including integration with U.S. Department of Energy (US-DOE) and other site contractors, and obtain customer and stakeholder acceptance. * Be responsible for oversight of WRPS engineering personnel and engineering subcontractors including development of requisition planning documents for subcontractor services. The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordinating with Closure Group Project Management on daily interfaces with WRPS technical staff, support organizations, and contracted technical personnel, weekly with US-DOE technical staff, regulators and technical staff from WA Department of Ecology, periodically with technical staff from US-DOE Headquarters, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the local office of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and occasionally with the public, including representatives of Tribal Nations, interested stakeholder groups, and the Hanford Advisory Board. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: - Function as the liaison between Engineering and Closure Project Management to ensure related engineering activities are appropriately defined and assigned. - Providing project engineering support for the Closure Group including oversight and direction to matrixed WRPS engineering support personnel and subcontractors. - Lead engineering design of interim measures and corrective measures to assess and mitigate the effects of contamination in the tank farms vadose zone. - Support the preparation of baseline planning documents for soil characterization in tank farms. - Support the development of data quality objectives and work plans to characterize soils in tank farms. - Support tank farm interim surface barrier and facility closure designs. - Support the evaluation of residual wastes in ancillary equipment in tank farm areas. - Evaluate alternative interim measures, corrective measures, and closure methods and technologies for their potential to cost effectively advance the tank farms closure mission and reduce program risks. - Develop and implement tools to communicate interim measures and corrective action results to regulators and stakeholders. - Support the preparation of Statements of Work and requisition planning documents for engineering sub-contractors to support Closure Group work scope. - Coordinate with Closure Project Management on presentation of technical information about engineering design and implementation of interim measures and corrective actions to staff, DOE, Ecology, EPA, NRC, tribal nations, stakeholders, and the public. - Provide mentorship for the professional development of engineering staff supporting Closure and Interim Measures. Please Note: This position is being advertised under the current Tank Operations Contractor, Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS). However, now that transition activities have begun a candidate selected for employment may be hired under the incoming contractor, Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) contract. Required Qualifications Grade 20: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering or related technical discipline; and Ten (10) years of related experience Grade 21: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering or related technical discipline; and Twelve (12) years of related experience Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased. Grade 22: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering or related technical discipline; and Fifteen (15) years of related experience Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased. Desired Qualifications - Experience applied to US DOE sites related to characterization, design, and-or implementation of interim measures and corrective actions for contaminated soils and ancillary equipment in tank farm area, and-or interim surface barriers in tank farm areas. - Experience in project engineering design & implementation - Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Compensation & Benefits In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
