Prism Center Intern (AY 24-25 902134)

The Prism Center for Queer and Trans Life aspires to build a just community that foregrounds critical engagement with intersectional systems of oppression. We do this by: 

Providing outreach, education, consultation, resources, support, programming, and advocacy services for students, staff, and faculty of all genders and sexual and romantic orientations.  Using a holistic approach to student development and empowerment that fosters space for identity exploration, community building, academic success, leadership development, and professional growth.  Centering the experiences of queer and trans people of color.

There are three intern positions focusing on programming, creating a welcoming environment, and maintaining the space for daily use. Interns individually and collectively provide programming for students with different queer, trans, and intersecting identities to engage students and build community at the center. 

Interviews conducted Spring 2024 for work in the 2024 - 2025 academic year. 

Essential Functions:

Through programming, Prism Center interns will promote academic excellence and build community for LGBTQIA+ community members and allies. Prism Center interns will work closely with Center staff to design and implement programs to support queer and trans students in the following areas: 

Academic success  Social transition  Community building  Alumni engagement 

Position Specific Duties 

Prism Center interns will: 

Coordinate,  plan, and execute annual programs and events like, but not limited to, Coming Out Day, Pride Week, Queer Sex Ed, Queer Book Club, and other events as decided by staff.   Take on additional or special projects related to the enhancement of the queer and trans student experiences on campus, including organized student outings or gatherings and maintaining a list of Middlebury and Vermont resources and opportunities for queer and trans students.  Maintain the listserv, documentation and communication with all LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, and staff.  Organize and maintain the gender-affirming clothing closet; plan and execute gender-affirming clothing swaps.  Work with the Social Media and Marketing intern to devise community updates and plan social media campaigns.  Assist with editing, prepping, and launching Closet Magazine. 

Administrative Duties 

Provide reception coverage for the Center, including greeting and assisting other students and visitors.  Provide information about the office and our programs to visitors.  Be familiar with Prism Center details, student organizations, campus events, and student resources and services.  Assist with planning, preparation, and execution of Center events. This includes setting up logistical elements of events and providing front-line assistance during the event.  Support Center staff and faculty on a wide range of projects including event planning, data input, program research, and logistical support. 

Additional Responsibilities: 

Complete space management tasks such as having students sign in, answering questions, ensuring students clean up after themselves, etc.  Complete office tasks as necessary: running errands, hanging posters, printing, and copying materials, etc.  Attend regular meetings with Prism Center staff.  Work collaboratively with AFC staff on collaborations.  Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills & Experience 

Prior leadership and work experience on campus  Demonstrated experience organizing and promoting campus programs and events 

Knowledge Desired 

Basic computer skills, proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook.  Basic office skills – photocopying and filing.  Knowledge of Middlebury College resources helpful.  Knowledge of other computer programs including, but not limited to, 25Live, MiddLink, Drupal, InDesign, and Photoshop, is helpful. 

Other 

Prism Center interns are Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors who have demonstrated personal and academic growth over their time at Middlebury College.

Position pays at level C. 

Commitment Period 

September through mid-May at approximately 15 hours per week.
