This is a full-time position located in Augusta. This opportunity allows partial telework with management approval.
This position serves the Subsurface Wastewater Unit at the Maine Drinking Water Program. The position assists private well owners with technical information and practical guidance in reference to water quality and quantity, and the positioning of wells on a property for compliance and resiliency. The position also oversees the third-party septic inspector training and certification for the subsurface wastewater unit as newly outlined in sections 15, 16, and 17 of the chapter 241 rules. This position additionally assists the public water system inspectors with groundwater well-related tasks.
Core Responsibilities:
As a key member of the Subsurface Wastewater Unit, your core responsibilities will include:
• Responding to private well related questions from the public. Topics may include water quality and treatment; water quantity and resiliency; and well drilling rules and best practices.
• Educating the public at conferences and workshops.
• Assisting with field-related issues like proper well disinfection and sampling technique.
• Helping the State Site Evaluator with the third-party septic inspectors’ examinations, and certifications.
• Investigating complaints from inspectors, septic installers, municipalities, or the public.
• Working toward obtaining Licensed Plumbing Inspector certification within four (4) years.
• Assisting public water system Inspectors with inquiries, activities, and complaints concerning Public Water Supplies.
Minimum Qualifications:
(Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience).
A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental, biological, physical science, or engineering which includes two (2) years of environmental experience. Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework from an accredited educational institution.
Preferred candidates will also have:
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with an appropriate business manner.
• Ability to gather, synthesize, and summarize a variety of information.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners.
• Computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet software.
• Ability to understand and communicate State of Maine statutes and rules.
• Knowledge of the principles of public health related to the protection of the environment.
• A good understanding of drilling techniques, well construction, and hydrogeology
• Knowledge of water treatment techniques.
• A good understanding of septic system (a/k/a subsurface wastewater disposal system) design and theory.
• Experience in well disinfection and water sampling.
