Summary:

The Supervisor Clinical Nurse functions in an administrative role on off-shifts, weekends and holidays; assumes responsibility for coordinating available resources to assure a high degree of safe and appropriate care and treatment for patients on their shift, throughout the health center in accordance with Mercy Health mission and values; acts as resource, role model, educator and change agent within Clinical Services. Works collaboratively to plan, implement and evaluate patient outcomes aimed at optimal health care. Accountable for professional nursing standards activity on their shift.  Works collaboratively with management for change, evaluation of practice standards and problem resolution.  Functions as a consultant to the staff and other departments, monitors problems and resolutions to assure quality patient care; and assesses, directs and assists in emergency situations.             

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides orientation, in-service training and continuing education of staff. Regular communication of goals, plans, and actions encouraging employee input and ownership.Holds self, employees and co-workers accountable for keeping patient safety the first priority in performing the essential duties of their jobs. Provides input regarding employee performance appraisal, rewards, consults and disciplines employees appropriately.              Responsible for staffing using acuity indices, work volumes and expertise/skills of the employee to provide efficient patient care. Personally directs or administers patient care during critical or emergency situations including interacting with families of patients involved. Coordinates with personnel or other departments during these times to provide for total needs of patients. Works closely with Admitting office in placing and transferring patients.              Provides peripheral intravenous access for patients. Acts as a designated requestor for Life Banc in handling tissue and organ donation requests with surviving family members. Obtains medical records, CVL films, and needed supplies, linens and equipment. Dispatches Mercy Police/courier to other facilities to obtain supplies and equipment. Approves prescriptions to be filled according to policy.              Represents administration and management on their shifts. Approves staff request for overtime when needed with a focus on managing resources utilization in a cost-efficient manner.  Notifies on-call personnel from Medical Social Services, 2D Echo, CVL, Gastroenterology, EEG, Cardiopulmonary Services of requests for emergency services.              Personally directs or administers patient care during critical or emergency situations including interacting with families of patients involved. Coordinates with personnel of others departments during these times of provide for total needs of patient. Responds to Mr Red Emergency to determine cause and assist Youngstown Fire department and maintenance as needed. Responds to Rapid Response Teams. Responds to codes (blue, pink, violet) and assists as needed.              Investigates and initiates Disaster Plan, Investigates bomb threats and initiates policy and procedures as outlined in Environment of Care Manual. Investigates incidents that involve patients, families, visitors and employee complaints.     Interprets, develops and implements policies and procedures from the health center and outside regulatory agencies to personnel, physicians, patients and families. Evaluates documentation of assessments and quality of care delivered by staff according to their skill level. Evaluates plan of care and application of nursing process to patient care including establishing diagnoses and developing plans of care. Evaluates nursing judgment of staff and their anticipation of patient/unit problems and their ability to implement appropriate interventions. Identifies and suggests various treatment modalities and nursing interventions as they apply to specific patient/significant other's need.              Supports ethical, cultural, psychosocial and religious beliefs and values of patient and significant others when planning care. Ensures that the patient's rights are respectfully upheld to the extent possible. Periodically visits patients rooms to assure maximum care and to ascertain need for additional or modified services.              "Role Models a strong commitment to Patient/Customer Experience.  Leads others to create the desired patient/customer experience. Assures employees have the training, tools and equipment they need to provide an extraordinary patient experience. Measures and keeps visible to team members the achievement levels of patient experience.  Trains employees on 5/10’ rule, 5 Must Haves for patient care givers, AIDET, language of caring, and other service excellence tools. Immediately addresses behaviors that are not creating the desired patient/customer experience, coaches for improvement, and holds employee accountable through performance evaluation rating and corrective action

MINIMUM EDUCATION              

Required Minimum Education:         Specialty/Major:   Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. BS/BSN required.     
               
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS (must be non-expired/active unless otherwise stated):               
Required:  Current licensure by the Ohio State Board of Nursing. BLS and ACLS required.  Certification within two years required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS               
Minimum Years and Type of Experience:       Three years experience as a professional nurse in which potential administrative supervisory competency has been demonstrated.          
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:       Computer literacy, Staff management and delegation skills. Requires considerable tact, some persuasion and listening skills to achieve results.
