Process Development Engineer

Hexcel is currently seeking a Process Development Engineer for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location. This position involves characterization of carbon fiber products and development of carbon fiber processes, with an emphasis on structure-property relationships and evaluation of fabrication methods.  Candidate must be able to identify and eliminate sources of variation in existing products and develop strategies for developing new products.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

Develop existing and novel theories on structural properties to improve current methods of carbon fiber production.Work within research teams and cross-functional teams to validate theories using material science characterization methods.Identify sources of variation within existing processes and products and work to eliminate them.  Propose new processes to provide improved products and validate these processes at lab, pilot, and industrial scales.Define and carry out strategies for developing new products according to customer specifications.Provide plant and customer support through identification and execution of material science techniques for specific queries.

Qualifications:

PhD degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, or related degree from a four-year college or university.  5-10 years of research experience in an industrial setting is preferred.  Preference given to candidates with experience with carbon fiber, composites, or polymer processing.Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional and scientific journals, general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, technical methods, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and suppliers.Knowledge of industry-standard materials tests and the ability to appropriately apply techniques to research problems.Ability to apply design of experiment concepts to hypothesis testing.  Ability to perform measurement system analyses on new and existing chemical techniques.Ability to perform process analyses to predict effects of process changes on carbon fiber and composite properties.Ability to independently apply and implement mathematical methods for interpretation and manipulation of analytical data. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.Ability to apply scientific methods and judgment to completion of assignments or directions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Ability to deal with problems involving tangible and intangible factors in standardized and non-standardized assignments and situations.Demonstrated ability to work in a safe manner within an office, lab or production environment.
