Summary of Position:
The Process Engineer designs, develops, and implements improvements to the efficiency and quality of food production equipment and parts used in both processing and packaging at all JBSS facilities. Responsibilities include establishing budgets and timelines for capital and expense projects and managing systems installations. The person in this position is a subject matter expert in the operation and control of their assigned equipment.
Functions of the Position:
Designs, redesigns, or modifies production equipment and implements changes to resolve problems and improve equipment/systems performance and reliability. Prepares completed layouts for final equipment/system design from simple sketches and/or vendor-supplied drawings.Evaluates production equipment and related systems for optimization.Teaches, coaches, and assesses factory operations, maintenance, and quality department personnel to support day-to-day production and the improvement of processing capabilities.Assists in new product development consultation and running trials in conjunction with the R&D department.Manages new equipment purchases by working closely with vendors to ensure equipment meets manufacturing requirements. Performs equipment Factory Acceptance Tests or other activities related to machine purchases and startups.Manages internal projects by supporting Maintenance and Fabrication Shop employees involved in new projects and retrofits/upgrades.
Education, Experience, and Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Chemical engineering or related field preferred.Five or more years’ experience in engineering and manufacturing.Knowledge and experience in the food or nutritional industry and knowledge of basic food science highly preferred.Hands-on experience with Continuous Improvement implementation.Project Management experience.Working knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks.Industrial performance experience preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
Understanding of Bulk Dry and Liquid Materials Handling and Processing.Understanding of Thermodynamics and metal fabrication methodologies.Demonstrates highly developed problem-solving skills.Good understanding of how factories operate, including equipment, automation, maintenance, production strategies, and quality control processes and measures.Ability to analyze data for a fact-based approach.Basic understanding of Ladder Logic used in PLC Programming preferred.Ability to interact and communicate effectively across functions and management levels.Ability to operate office equipment.Ability to supervise projects and personnel.Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and Outlook.Ability to stand for four hours a day and walk large facilities.Manual dexterity and ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
