Job Summary
The Product Specific Engineer will be responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting and improving the specific product line that they have been designated. These responsibilities are met by focusing the appropriate time on the primary drivers of profitability: production, quality, safety, environmental stewardship and cost management.
The engineer provides the appropriate focus on production by developing and monitoring appropriate production benchmarks, developing clear and defined plans for process improvement, using structured approaches to remove production bottlenecks, understanding commercial drivers, clearly communicating appropriate production schedules to the production team, and working with operations and reliability to ensure production schedules are met.
The engineer provides the appropriate focus on quality by working with the production group to understand, benchmark, and drive improvement in both product quality and food safety. The individual shall take an active role in the HACCP team and actively work to improve the HACCP plan. The engineer is expected to consider GMP’s when making process and/or design changes. They are expected to work to further their understanding of facility engineering as it relates to food safety and quality practices.
The engineer will serve as a leader for safety and actively participate and support safety initiatives. They will demonstrate this by participating in safety teams, support corporate safety initiatives, hold themselves to the highest standard and accept nothing else from those around them.
The engineer will also provide the appropriate focus on environmental stewardship by working with the production and environmental teams to ensure compliance with all applicable statutes (CCA, CWA, RCRA) and applicable permits. They will be responsible for monitoring and maintain records of emission control devices, regulated chemicals, and help to ensure the plant operate in an environmentally conscious manner.
The engineer must drive cost management by ensuring the process operates in the most efficient manner possible. A focus on energy inputs, product yields, input utilizations, and process cost controls will allow the engineer to successfully manage the process costs. The engineer is expected to understand the energy input to the process, primary users of that energy and monitor that usage for both improvement and abnormal usage. They should understand how process flows affect the production and yield. They also need to work to limit excess processing and waste streams. Working with the Reliability and Procurement teams should help them understand major cost drivers and assist them in finding ways to reduce those costs through reliability and sourcing improvements.
Essential Job FunctionsCollaboration with FLS to enforce Safety, Environmental, Quality, and HR programs.Review and follow up on process indicators. Making these indicators available to all for the creation of a transparent process.Develop and advertise structured approaches for developing a more efficient process.Maintain an accurate measurement of how the process is doing with tools such as the Cumulative Report, Opportunity Summary and Monthly updates.Ensure proper documentation of the process is maintained to satisfy compliance initiatives. Understands their role in food safety and quality systems, actively participates in food safety efforts and ensures all activities conform to good manufacturing practices.Education/TrainingDegree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering or equivalent with minimum 5 years of relevant industrial experience.ExperienceIndividual is expected to complete an orientation process that is tailored to their prior industrial background.Special SkillsStrong verbal and technical writing skills are needed.Strong data analysis skills are desired.Individual must be able to coordinate multi-talented teams to make a sustainable effort of improving the process. Engineer needs to be able to develop and communicate a strong vision of a continuously improved process.
