Job Description

NBC News is looking for a producer to join its Business & Economy unit. This person will report to the Senior Editor of the unit and work with the full team of correspondents, reporters, producers and editors on a broad scope of topics including consumer issues, business trends, the economy and showbiz. The producer will have a high metabolism for daily news while also constantly thinking about the bigger picture. They will be adept at producing for a range of shows, content types and platforms, including NBC News’ website. This includes field producing, package producing, live TV production and article writing.  This producer will be at ease managing all phases of reporting from ideation to execution, including reporting, interview selection and preparation, scripting and editing. This producer will also be a strong reporter and writer who can produce original and enterprising work and write for TV or digital when required.
 

Responsibilities:

Conceive, research and pitch day-of-air segments, original reporting and long-form enterprise series for NBC News’ broadcast and digital platformsProduce breaking news coverage including quick scripting, field producing and shootingIndependently shoot, write and produce live and taped stories and segmentsRegularly pitch, report and write for digitalCollaborate with teams across platforms on distinct, original editorial pursuitsMaintain timely understanding of current events and ongoing coverage in entertainment, business and technology.Monitor and flag key daily business, consumer and entertainment storiesBuild and maintain sourcing.This position has been designated as hybrid, based in 30 Rock, with a minimum of 3 days per week in office

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or relevant course of study, or equivalent experienceAt least three years’ experience producingProficiency handling breaking news and tight deadlinesMust have experience in producing stories, including researching, writing, and shootingPossess a strong understanding of the unit’s coverage areasThe ability to represent NBC News in a professional mannerMust be able to multitask potentially multiple stories across a broad range of topicsMust be willing to travel as neededAble and willing to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking newsMust be willing to work in NYCMust have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States

Desired Qualifications:

A proven track record in one or more of the unit’s coverage areas. Sourcing is preferred but not mandatory.Ability to review and comprehend inflation, jobs, interest rates and other economic data – and to translate it for a broad audienceA collegial, flexible and collaborative approach to the jobAbility to develop multiple story ideas simultaneously, research and plan segments and digital storiesExceptional news judgment and editorial skills: Ability to recognize stories with high potential for compelling contentStrong writing skillsEditorial knowledge of business/technology/entertainment storiesStrong time management skillsPreferred but not required proficiency with Slack and iNews
