CBC is currently seeking a Producer for Q with Tom Power. Five days a week, acclaimed interviewer Tom Power sits down with the artists, writers, actors and musicians who define pop culture.

In this role you will bring care, consideration and confidence to directing and mixing the show, which includes providing editorial support to the host, instructing the audio engineer, overseeing timing, pacing and flow, and selecting and incorporating music and other elements to create solid transitions between segments.

Reporting to the Executive Producer, this role also requires you to pitch and produce segments, and to package the show for broadcast. A masterful mixer who values the importance of sound and pacing in storytelling and show programming, you are skilled at using audio clips, music and other elements that contribute to the overall editorial and sonic flow of the show.  You’re a capable writer who is able to channel the host’s conversational and unique voice seamlessly from introductions to interstitial show elements.

You have experience guiding an audio production team in a studio and are confident in giving meaningful feedback and guidance to producers, engineers and our host. You’re comfortable making quick decisions and you communicate them clearly. You help guide the host to sound more like themselves, and can make adjustments on the fly. You’re committed to contributing to a team culture where voices are valued, new ideas are welcomed, and high editorial standards are upheld.

You have expert knowledge of the Journalistic Standards and Practices of CBC (or similar) and are confident making judgements in complex and stressful situations in accordance with these journalistic policy guidelines, including recognizing when other counsel is needed.

Key Responsibilities 

Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by the Executive Producer 

Directs studio sessions with host giving consideration to the show’s many platforms 

Writes and edits in the host’s voice, for both the show and for promotional clips and interstitials

Sources and vets sound design elements including music programming for the show, and ensures, in collaboration with Copyright Clearance Officers or others, the proper and accurate clearance of all material used in the program

Mixes and packages the show’s audio for broadcast

Offers feedback to the host on performance/delivery, and participates in a daily debrief with the Q senior leadership team 

Establishes a culture of collaboration and maintains strong partnerships with teams to deliver Q content across platforms (video, digital, social, international distribution)

Vets and produces audio stories, ensuring journalism meets CBC standards and practices

At times may be assigned tasks related to production of the podcast versions of the show

May perform all or part of the functions or duties of an equivalent or lower classification                        

 

Your profile/Qualifications

Requires five years of experience, of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry directly related to the area of assignment

A university degree or equivalent

Experience directing a host, with demonstrated success in building trust and delivering ongoing and meaningful feedback

Experience producing segments, from pitching to submitting a final edit

Experience packaging audio programs for broadcast

A passion for sound design and a commitment to quality audio

Expert knowledge of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, or similar Ability to work, and direct the work of others, to tight deadlines without sacrificing creativity or quality or a positive environment 

Experience leading difficult conversations, offering feedback and managing accountability

Cultural awareness and sensitivity

Commitment to continuous learning and personal growth

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime and weekends as required

Ability to contribute innovative "out-of-the-box" thinking to daily production

Experience directing live broadcasts would be an asset

Experience in video production would be an asset
