We are seeking a Product Developer to join our RC Surface Product Development team. Primary responsibility is to design, create, and improve products through various stages of development.  Manage products or product categories in a way that maximizes customer satisfaction, quality, sales and margin potential.  The Product Developer sources and develops products with the right features, innovation, quality and cost to satisfy Horizon Hobby’s customers within the value standards of Horizon Hobby.

Typical pay for this position is $65,000-75,000/year. The final offer for this position will be based on the unique experience and qualifications of the candidate selected. This position may also be eligible for a bonus not included in the base pay range.   

This is an on-site position. 

Roles & Responsibilities

Ensures the quality of new products selected for development provides the value expected by Horizon Hobby customers.   Monitors Horizon’s proprietary surface brands and competitive products or product categories to assure that surface brands maintain their competitive advantage.  Targets and fills category or product gaps and maintains an optimal product portfolio that provides sufficient choices for Horizon Hobby customers to maximize the value received from their purchase.   Coordinates the research, concept, design, testing and development of new products across functional teams, with vendors and with marketing and purchasing groups.   Assists, as required, in the development of manufacturing resources for products and works with existing manufacturers to assure the availability of the necessary capacity planning to produce products that meet market demand.   Participates in the pricing process on new products, provides efficient and accurate costing during development and provides suggested pricing for all assigned products.  Coordinates, executes or has visibility into all aspects of new product packaging collaborating with marketing, and creative departments, including writing user instructions, if necessary.   Communicates with purchasing, as necessary to ensure the development and maintenance of optimal inventory levels and system set up for new product releases.   Provides training as required for sales on service on new product releases.   Ensures that all legal compliance, environmental, and industry requirements are met for assigned products.   Communicates with vendors to keep products in development moving forward to meet planned schedules.   Manages and reports on warranty/defective product issues to assure the effective and efficient support of products returned for repair and/or replacement.   Attend trade shows and hobby events as required and be available for possible overseas and domestic travel as necessary.  Manage each project within the given timeline to ensure the project meets the release to market date.  Provide a keen eye to growing segments in the R/C industry and propose ideas to Surface Product Development team.  

Education and/or Experience

Minimum five years of experience in a product development environment in either the RC hobby, toy or multi line item BOM industries   Knowledge of the RC industry and significant hands-on experience using RC products and tools required.   Bachelor’s degree in engineering, manufacturing, industrial design or professional product development related field is highly preferred.  Must be self-motivated, capable of managing multiple projects-, highly meticulous, and able to organize/set work priorities for themselves.   Critical and creative thinker and able to make key decisions w/ confidence.   Must possess strong project management skills with the ability to parallel manage projects that are in different development stages.  Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to communicate and interact with all levels of the organization, vendors, and customers. Must possess good mechanical skills.   Strong proficiency in the use of computers with knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook, and Oracle applications.
