Position Summary
The Student and Postdoctoral Scholars Development Office (SPSD) supports the career and professional development of undergraduate students (2-year and 4-year institutions), graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars worldwide through the development and deployment of career and professional development workshops, publications, tools, and educational research projects that help build a well-rounded, inclusive workforce. The Program Manager, Student and Postdoctoral Scholars Development, reports to the Assistant Director, and will be responsible for leading research strategy, developing, updating, facilitating, and assessing career and professional development content to support students (undergraduate and graduate) and postdoctoral scholars in the chemical sciences, collaborating with internal and external partners as appropriate. This role leads and/or contributes to current programming such as ACS Career Kick-Starter, the Postdoc to Faculty Workshop, the student and postdoctoral website, Mentor Training Workshops for Graduate and Postdoctoral Scholars, and events and programming, conducted at ACS meetings.
Position Accountabilities
Develops, deploys, assesses, updates, and facilitates workshops and career and professional development resources for students (undergraduate and graduate) and postdoctoral scholars, collaborating with internal and external partners as appropriate (including career transition programs, digital experiences, community engagement, and support, etc.).
Leads research strategy, data collection, and analysis to inform strategic initiatives that support student and postdoctoral scholars’ career and professional development, including but not limited to, graduate and postdoctoral survey deployment, analysis, and strategic dissemination of results and recommendations.
Contributes to the planning and implementation of new and current career and professional development initiatives that promote/advance diversity and inclusion within chemistry graduate and postdoctoral education.
Supports the Assistant Director, Student and Postdoctoral Scholars Development with other activities of the unit, Division, and Society as needed. This includes activities and special projects that advance ACS career and professional development opportunities and resources for students and postdoctoral scholars.
Collaborates with internal partners as needed (e.g., ACS Education, ACS Communications, ACS Membership, ACS Meetings and Expositions, ACS Society Business Solutions, etc.)
Represents the Society at ACS national, regional, and local section meetings, and at meetings external to ACS, as needed.
Education/Experience/Technical Knowledge
Ph.D. in chemical sciences, or STEM related discipline and postdoctoral experience. Experience should include at least 3+ years of career and professional development experience or related. Ability to think strategically, analyze and leverage data for programmatic improvements, teach and/or facilitate workshops, manage multiple priorities, excellent written and oral communication skills, effective collaboration and partnership building, ingenuity, proactivity, reliability, and commitment are required. Experience using Microsoft 360, Excel, Adobe Photoshop/Canva, Qualtrics, and Adobe Acrobat.
