Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This single classification is used for temporary appointment(s) to provide job training for regularly enrolled or continuing students. The City of Stockton’s Internship Program is designed to give students an inside look at the City of Stockton’s employment opportunities and provide public sector job experience by giving interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff. This position may also be used within the Student Worker Program to provide students between the ages of 16-19 the opportunity to gain employment experiences. Internship and Student Worker participants will vary widely based on the training assignment and the department program needs. PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only) + Assists in a wide variety of tasks within various City of Stockton departments. + Performs field, clerical, technical, or paraprofessional work. + Coordinates special projects with various City departments, specialized staff, other jurisdictions, community-based organizations, or the private sector. + Assists in gathering, compiling, and analyzing data for entry into spreadsheets or department specified database software. + Responds to requests for information and provides necessary customer service to members of the community, business organizations, and other City employees. + Assists in researching and developing oral/written programs or reports for presentation. + Provides information regarding City and/or department practices, procedures, and events, as well as operate computer systems and related software in the course of work. + Reads and interprets typical business correspondences, reports, City/departmental policies, and records. + Adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and department goals. + May assist and participate in City events at other locations. + Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Student Interns must be currently enrolled as a student in an accredited college or university with a minimum of six (6) semester units or nine (9) quarter units, OR a continuing student with the intent to continue enrollment in the next regularly scheduled term. Student’s current standing and continued enrollment are subject to review by the Director of Human Resources or their designee. Student Workers must be a resident of Stockton and be between the ages of 16-19 years of age at the time of the application. Other Requirements: + Student Interns must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. + Some Student Intern positions may require a valid Class C California driver’s license. + May be required to submit fingerprints and/or a urine drug screen as a requirement of employment if 18 years of age or older. + Must arrange own transportation to and from work. Students in the Internship and Student Worker Program may work in various departments throughout the City. Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) may be required based on department requirements. A uniform shirt must be worn during work hours. Knowledge of: + Principles and practices within a specialized field of study valuable to the department and assigned work; + Office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment such as personal computers and software i.e., Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.); + Methods of data compilation, research, and analysis using department specific database software; + Proficient English grammar skills; + Basic mathematics skills; + Customer service principles and practices; and + Basic tools and safe work methods. Skill in: + Understanding, following, and carrying out instructions; + Solving problems effectively with critical thinking skills; + Applying learned procedures and processes related to assigned area; + Typing at a speed necessary for adequate job performance; + Using a computer and related software to input, query, and maintain data; + Maintaining confidentiality of information; + Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing; + Presenting self as calm and professional while following designated protocols in stressful and/or emergency situations; + Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others; + Preparing clear, concise, and accurate reports, correspondences, and other written materials; and + Making sound judgements in accordance with Federal, State, and City laws, regulations, and policies. Physical/Mental Requirements: + Mobility – Frequent sitting for long periods while operating a keyboard; occasional walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling and neck/waist twisting; + Lifting – Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds; + Vision – Constant use of overall visual capabilities requiring the ability to read fine print, and/or normal type size print and detect color, PC screens, and other visual display terminals. + Dexterity – Frequent finger coordination such as typing, picking, and pinching; frequent grasping with both hands, dominant and undominant; occasional reaching above and below shoulder level; + Hearing/Talking – Ability to understand what people are saying in normal conversation, over the telephone, frequently over noise; + Special Requirements – May require occasional evening, night, or weekend work; + Environmental Conditions –Frequent exposure to noise, and outdoor conditions; and + May perform duties in an office or field environment.
