Project Coordinator (Journal Manager)

Project Coordinator (Journal Manager)

Would you like to build a career in academic publishing?

Do you enjoy relationship building, process management, and problem solving?

About our Team

As part of our team, you will manage the operational process for your own portfolio of academic journals whilst collaborating with a large team of other Journal Managers. You will be a member of a collaborative and inclusive team that encourages autonomy and personal development, whilst working together to achieve our department objectives and key results.  You will contribute to a supportive team culture by sharing knowledge, ideas, and best practice. We operate a hybrid working policy. We are office-based and request attendance in our centrally located office in Exeter one day per week. The office is open and available most days for staff who prefer to come in.

About the Role

In the Journal Manager role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of your own portfolio of academic journals.

You will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end publication process of these journals, becoming an operational expert in their workflows and processes, and a technical expert in the systems they use.  You will be empowered to drive improvements on your journals by optimising journal configuration and workflows. You won’t need an understanding of the content of the publications, or a scientific background.

You will build and maintain trust and long-term collaborative relationships with global stakeholders via emails and virtual video calls with your external customers (Society partners, editors, authors and reviewers) and your internal stakeholders (Publishers and other teams).

To enable your success, a full training program will be delivered by experienced colleagues, plus continued mentoring support. If you are excited about working for Elsevier and feel your previous experience has given you transferable skills in at least some of the areas mentioned, we want to hear from you.

Responsibilities

Become the operational expert for your portfolio so you can offer a first-class, personalised service to our Society partners and external customers (researchers/editors/authors/reviewers)

Support and work closely with the other key contacts responsible for the success of the journals (Societies, Editors, Publishers, third-party suppliers, and other internal teams)

Build and maintain strong working relationships with your internal and external stakeholders through trust, reliability, and expertise

Continuously monitor editorial and production processes, ensuring deadlines are met from submission to publication

Use reporting to spot trends in data and drive process improvements for maximum speed and efficiency

Requirements

You have excellent written and verbal communication skills that enable you to build strong relationships with customers/stakeholders

You can learn new systems and technical processes/workflows, and your communication skills allow you to articulate technical problems to a variety of stakeholders in an understandable way

You thrive on autonomy, and you’re comfortable driving results and change through virtual relationships

You have experience of managing deadlines, and you feel comfortable prioritising and communicating when problems arise

You can work in our Exeter office one day per week
