Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Hospital Transformation, provides administrative leadership on behalf of Dana Farber Cancer Institute to plan and execute the development of 788,000 sq feet project to initiate a cancer hospital in the Longwood Medical Area totaling $1.5 billion dollars.  Working in concert with the Construction Executive and other key stakeholders for the project, this position supports the design process, directs the transition and move, and facilitates multiple process improvement initiatives to provide high quality, low cost inpatient care.

 

This position is responsible for strategy deployment and leadership, operations improvement and decision making, financial planning and forecasting and project execution.

 

This position serves, during design development, as the liaison between clinical operating units and the project team, including the Construction Executive, Facilities & Real Estate, and the project architect and other consultants. Lead projects’ scope and design phase to ensure compliance with DFCI’s standards and quality guidelines while managing stakeholder expectations within scope and budget. During the transition and go-live execution phase this role provides direction to project team to manage risk, costs, priorities, and opportunities. In the final activation phase provide go-live leadership, directing, and implementing the transition and move plan.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Leadership - 25%

• Reports to SVP, Hospital Transformation, working with the design team supports the successful completion of the interior design process, develops the readiness plan, and defines and manages the successful go-live process on-time and on-budget.
• Represents clinical operations as a “Core Team member” on project team to help facilitate the development of the cancer hospital with Construction Executive, contractor, architect, Facilities & Real Estate.
• Directs the overall go-live plan including transition and activation up until project close out. Primary management of the clinical workgroups involved in design development and overall supervision of the go-live workgroups.
• Communicates key project and operational decisions to workgroups and other stakeholders to ensure assumptions are managed.

 

Operations Improvement & Decision Making - 25%

• Translates clinical operations strategic plan goals into the programming, design and execution of the cancer hospital with a focus on clinical quality, patient safety and patient experience.
• Leads clinical operations workgroups to implement operational improvements identified in building design including registration/welcome center, observation unit, inpatient units (inclusive of ICU), pharmacy, imaging, radiation oncology and food services in coordination with corresponding functional leaders, planning and consulting and Health Systems Improvement.
• Partners with clinical faculty to understand potential adverse events of proposed cancer hospital clinical care operations and develop mitigation plan which is supported by physicians who will move to the cancer hospital.
• Utilizing Lean principles, collaborates with departments to facilitate change in systems and process to enhance efficiency in new clinical spaces helping reduce the cost of care.
• Partners with patients and families to optimize work streams and processes.

 

Financial - 20%

• Assist in the development of the cancer hospital pro forma defining departmental staffing, training and operational plans to estimate project ROI.
• Partners with Finance to roll the cancer hospital costs into operational budgets beginning in the fiscal year of the building opening.
• Collaborates with Construction Executive to support capital spend including decision making for contingency use.

 

Project Execution - 25%

• Collaborates with DFCI leadership and executive management on the cancer hospital from strategic visioning through to project completion.
• Coordinates with clinical user groups and services the detailed review of all design drawings for accuracy and completion and documenting feedback.
• Monitors local and national trends pertaining to healthcare design, ambulatory care models, healthcare information technology and regulatory requirements.
• Serves as liaison for internal and external clinical facility site visits.
• Represents the institution to appropriate internal and external groups.

 

Special Projects - 5%

• Participation and completion of projects as assigned by the SVP, Hospital Transformation.

Qualifications

• MBA or MHA degree required.
• 10 years of administrative experience in healthcare inpatient-related environment or relevant experience required.

• Prior experience with building, planning and opening of a health care facility preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Working knowledge of Lean.
• Project Management and process improvement experience in Healthcare setting.
• Possess excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, including the ability to speak in large groups.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize work in order to meet short deadlines.
