This Project Engineer position will be filled as a Level 6, Sr. Project Engineer, and will support APC Plants Barry, Theodore, Washington County, and MPC Plants Chevron, Daniel, Watson.
WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL
This position will be based out of Mobile, AL or Gulfport, MS. Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office or at a plant/field site and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment). This position will require a mix of both field and office work. Field work can include site visits to various generating facilities and may require overnight travel. This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.POSITION SUMMARY
A Project Engineer acts as the engineering manager for design and procurement activities for a variety of projects throughout Southern Company. Projects include large capital and maintenance (retrofits), in the areas of existing fossil generation, environmental, new electric utility power generation including gas and renewables, control systems, gas, and electric utility transmission systems. This role is responsible for managing the engineering scope, engineering budgets, engineering schedules, and serves as the main point of contact for engineering deliverables to the project manager.
The Project Engineer also works with design disciplines to ensure adequate and qualified resources are assigned to the project, anticipating changes in project scope, budget, and schedule requirements, and developing/communicating mitigation plans for those changes. They also identify and communicate lessons learned and facilitate resolving engineering and vendor related issues. This position is also required to maintain accurate project records in a variety of project management applications.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plusTechnical & Leadership Experience:
Experience working at a plant within the Southern Company electric generation fossil fleet is strongly preferred. 5+ years’ combined experience in any of the following areas is required: Design or project management as related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for electric utility generation systems or heavy industrial projects. Formal or informal experience in a lead type role (i.e. directing activities of direct reports or project team members) Experience working in (or in direct support of) at least one of the following areas is required: Power plant operations Plant facility operations (Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil, etc.) Electric utility generation systems Budget/schedule management Understanding of project change control Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutionsKnowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes. Must possess strong management and organization skills. Ability to build and maintain an attentive, productive, diverse team. Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies.
