Located between McGill University’s downtown campus and the Mount Royal, the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) opened its doors in 1893.  Since 2015, in close collaboration with the Government of Quebec, McGill University has been working on a new pavilion of 50,000m2 on the former RVH site (“the New Vic Project”), following the relocation of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) to the Glen Site.  Phased over several years, this major redevelopment project is intended to be structuring for McGill, Montreal area and the historic and natural borough of Mount Royal.  The Project is anticipated to be completed by the fall of 2028.
 

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Planning and Development the incumbent will be responsible for projects related to construction of academic/research facilities.  Act as an advisor in the construction of institutional laboratory and or educational buildings. The ideal candidate will harbor a passion for the construction of academic/research facilities and bring his/her creativity and experience in the construction of institutional laboratories and/or educational buildings to our project.  We seek a candidate who is detail oriented, a team player, willing to learn, and has a construction background.

Primary Responsibilities:

Oversight of preparatory work (relocation of existing occupants, decontamination work, temporary M/E infrastructure to maintain buildings operational);Supervise a team of external project professionals with expertise in architecture, engineering, construction, support services, FM and logistics, equipment planning and procurement, as well as in IT planning and implementation.Development of support services and facilities management services throughout the new pavilion, as well as the development of strategic plan for information systems and equipment planning and procurement process.Manage and execute multiple projects during the execution and delivery phasesAct as key player on the project team with respect to third party professional consultants and contractors.Provide professional expertise to help the internal and external stakeholders define their needs and develop projects in consultation with the stakeholders and other interested University constituencies.Assist the Director of Planning and Development in achieving goals and objectives, project deadlines, throughout the construction phases of the project.Participate in meetings with the City of Montreal including the borough of Ville-Marie and other prime external stakeholders such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, and the ‘‘Société Québécoise des infrastructures’’.Assure that McGill standards, operational and administrative protocols are respected and applied by both professional consultants and contractors.Monitor the performance of contractors to ensure that contractual obligations are met satisfactorily.Execute projects using established standard project management methodology, including planning, scheduling, and monitoring projects through the entire systems development lifecycle.Identify resource and support requirements (human, physical, financial) and make recommendations to the director.Manage and track financial, time and resource aspects of the projects against the estimated budgets and timelines.Generate appropriate risk assessments and risk registries for projects.Write progress reports and project summaries as required. Present comprehensive reports documenting that all project requirements were fulfilled, as well as the projects’ history, including what was done, who was involved, and what could be done better in the future.Act as liaison at internal and external meetings. Represent the University’s position and act as link between external and governmental agencies, the University community and senior administration, end-users, IT services and faculties, departments and units.Represent the project team on the construction site. Regular and frequent presence on site required. Key project liaison with the construction and project manager representatives on site.Prepare and present verbal and written presentations to individuals and groups as required by the project dynamics.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Undergraduate Degree in an engineering discipline preferredMinimum of eight (8) years’ related experience preferredDemonstrated experience in major institutional development projects, from planning to development through to commissioning, operational readiness and move inHighly organized with an ability to prioritize and multi-task in a deadline-oriented environmentKnowledge of construction industry practices and procedures is essentialProfessional certification as an engineer is preferred PMP certification desirableGood knowledge of current technology and building codes as it relates to institutional construction and renovation with experience in laboratory design or/and educational institutionComprehensive knowledge of HVAC building systems (plumbing, heating, electrical and ventilation infrastructure) a mustExhibits excellent attention to detail as well as demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skillsStrong customer service focus and ability to give direction and assistance to clients. Strong ability to work in a PC environment using MS Office, Autocad, REVITStrong team player, able to rally internal stakeholders to common planning goals and objectives, in a mutually respectful manner, and ultimately achieving strong buy-in and satisfactionEnglish & French, spoken & written is required“Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #3 on a scale of 0-4.”
