Project Officer - Water Innovation

Employment opportunity (multi-year project) for an experienced research Project Officer in the Water Innovation Lab, in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, located at Macdonald Campus (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue). 


Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Lab Director, the Project Officer support the mission of the Water Innovation Lab (develop technologies, best practices, and to disseminate knowledge on sustainable water, food and environmental systems), and collaborate with its many partners, stakeholders, and student trainees.  Manage overall operations of the Water Innovation Lab.  Act as advisor to the Lab Director.  Manage financial matters by preparing the budget, monitoring spending and revenues, and resolving discrepancies.  Develop and maintain solid working relationship with academics, administrators, trainees, donors, funding agencies, partners and other stakeholders. 

Primary Responsibilities:

Develop annual work plans on water resources projects in Canada and overseas;

Prepare annual budgets and quarterly cash flow projections for the projects.  Carry out financial management through periodic review of spending, fund reconciliation, and resolution of discrepancies.  Ensure application of the McGill Travel policy and the procurement process.  Obtain quotations for purchases, request purchase orders, review invoices and submit for payments.

Advise on allocation of human and financial resources to achieve the most advantageous project outcomes;

Establish and maintain effective relationship with the donors and funding agencies in order to meet and comply with administrative and reporting requirements;

Work closely with the McGill Office of Sponsored Research and McGill Financial Services.  Collect relevant data and complete periodic administrative and financial reporting for the project;  Work on administrative requirements with the various third party project partners;

Provide management expertise and guidance to the students and researchers working on the national and international projects;

Negotiate partnership agreements, and maintain successful and engaging relationships with project partners and stakeholders.

Collaborate with an incumbent responsible for maintaining the h2oinnovation web site.  Contribute material and ensure that information related to the Lab is current and up-to-date. 

Organize and attend various meetings.  Produce agenda, slides and minutes of meetings.   Present material, such as progress and financial reports.   May be required to organize and oversee larger-scale events such as conferences, annual meetings, etc. 

Undertake other/new management responsibilities dictated by the evolution of the projects over time, and in partnership with Lab Director.  Contribute to supporting and promoting the continuity and growth of the Water Innovation Lab. 


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Demonstrated ability to effectively solve problems, propose solutions and influence decisions in a professional manner.     Demonstrated experience in general management, including project and financial management.   Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated organizational and analytical skills. 

Education:   Undergraduate degree in a related field, with 3 years of experience. 

Master’s degree preferred (M.Eng. or MBA).  Willingness to learn management information systems specific to McGill (Banner financial information, Travel expenses policy, MMP for procurement, etc.) 

Must possess some proficiency in French conversation.  Knowledge of English: McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 on a scale of 0-4.
