This is the perfect role for an early-career Engineer. You'll have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the Vermont power system with a focus on protection and control system design while performing power system studies, maintaining various engineering software models and troubleshooting/ analyzing power system disturbances.
VELCO has a four-level career ladder: Associate, Mid-Level, Senior and Principal. Associate/Mid-Level engineering applicants will generally have 0 to 6 years of experience (0-3 for Associate; 3-6 for Mid-level). As you progress in this role, you will have the opportunity to advance to senior if you become a dependable subject matter expert that has the ability to lead teams, train others, and take on the most challenging tasks. You also would have the ability to advance to a principal engineer if you become well respected within the industry through organizations such as NATF, IEEE, and CIGRE.
How you will make an impact
The Protection Engineer will support the equipment protection systems for electrical power systems to ensure the safety, reliability, and stability of the grid. You'll have access to innovative technologies, gain industry exposure and learn nuances of the VELCO Transmission and Sub Transmission grid.
Responsibilities
+ Maintain system short circuit models, and miscellaneous software databases or spreadsheets.
+ Perform short circuit studies, fault clearing studies, and similar analytical studies
+ Deliver results and recommendations in engineering reports.
+ Develop power system analysis electrical computations and relay coordination studies associated with protective equipment.
+ Development of protective relay setting basis documentation, setting files, and associated test plans.
+ Perform analysis of protective relay system operations resulting from system disturbances and explain results to System Operations personnel and others requiring this information.
+ Perform design of protective relay systems with input from all company departments. Effectively communicate and coordinate with the company technical disciplines to ensure systems and schemes are designed to meet applicable industry standards and the company's corporate objectives for a safe, reliable, and economic transmission system.
+ Develop, review, and maintenance of company design standards, specifications, engineering procedures, and equipment configuration settings templates.
+ Provides engineering assistance in relay testing and commissioning of new and upgraded substations and their subsystems, on both large and small projects, to ensure these systems have been installed and commissioned per the “engineered” design and settings.
+ Provide engineering support and analytical guidance to the VELCO system operators, system planners, field technical personnel, and Vermont distribution utilities
+ Interface with other agencies and utilities to resolve protection system questions.
+ Prepare for and participate in NERC compliance audits.
Who you are
A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with a focus on power systems is preferred. Equivalent degrees, work studies, or experience are welcomed to apply.
Knowledge/Skills
Skills and knowledge will include reading and interpreting electrical schematics, performing electrical computations and developing configuration files for microprocessor based protective relaying devices and other substation intelligent electronic devices. Core skills include, but not limited to:
+ Fundamental understanding of electrical engineering principles, practices, and tools.
+ Knowledgeable with Power system calculations: per-unit analysis, symmetrical components, etc.
+ Knowledgeable with Mathcad or similar engineering computational software, Aspen or equivalent short circuit modelling software, and analysis software.
+ Knowledgeable with modern microprocessor protective relays and their software packages, i.e. Schweitzer and other relays and engineering software.
+ Knowledgeable with Scripting/Coding is a plus (e.g., BASIC, C++, VBA, or Python).
+ Proficient in MS Office suite of programs.
+ Knowledgeable with testing and commissioning of electrical systems is a plus.
+ Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
+ Ability to be both creative and analytical.
+ Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
Important Considerations
• VELCO is headquartered in Rutland, Vermont.
• This is a hybrid position and the expectation is that the incumbent will spend at least two days per week onsite and more as needed.
• Must be able convey complex information in writing, verbally and by demonstration, perform typical administrative functions such as keyboarding, work additional hours when necessary.
• Duties will require periodic overnight travel.
• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Must be able to respond to off-duty calls, particularly in the event of system emergencies, prolonged equipment and/or customer outages.
• Must maintain a valid driver's license.
