Job Description

A Protective Force Officer (PFO) is the most visible contributor within the NREL Community to detecting, deterring, and denying threats and hazards in support of a safe and supportive work environment. This position is located within the NREL Office Laboratory Protection (LP) Operations group. NREL is a free-flow campus with staff and visitors regularly checking in at our gates and buildings. Though non-armed, PFOs utilize de-escalation tactics to mitigate threats and ensure safety. PFOs respond to emergencies and incidents, and using a customer service approach, see them through to recovery and reconstitution of normal operations.  PFOs are an integral part of the NREL campus providing security and emergency preparedness protection services in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, and contractual requirements.

The Protective Force Shift Supervisor provides shift leadership and management to a team of PFOs providing incident response as management of a variety of situations. We are looking for a supervisor to continue building a positive culture through leadership and integrity!

This position will support Shift 3 (Night) from 2300 to 0730. The supervisor provides leadership, operation control, mentorship, coaching, counseling and training for 5 assigned PFOs. Work schedule to be determined upon hire, may require work on nights, weekends and holidays.


Key tasks and areas of responsibility include:

Provide leadership to a shift of Protective Force Officers, including training, coaching, counseling, performance management, recognition, team building, conflict resolution and scheduling.Lead the team with an emphasis on building a positive work culture that includes professionalism, respect and open communication.Provide positive interactions and build good working relationships with staff, management, visitors, and partners.Perform functions related to security, emergency preparedness, and response on a day-to-day basis.Minimize impact, promptly report, and respond to security and emergency incidents in an efficient and professional manner.Write and review Incident Reports, Shift Reports, and other documents for accuracy in details, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.Work in conjunction with Mission Support staff to ensure a high level of communications between Operations and Mission Support.Contribute and participate in Limited Scope Performance Testing, exercises and drill planning and execution.Contribute to OLP document review and evaluation.Conduct vehicle and foot patrol activities to observe and report.Monitor and enforce NREL policies and procedures and DOE Orders.Complete daily activity, occurrence, and incident reports.Operate CCTV electronic surveillance security system.Follow Emergency Notification System (ENS) sheets to facilitate notification and internal/external response.

Basic QualificationsPrevious supervisory experience may be required. Certification and/or degree in specified field is required. Knowledge of legal and ethical management issues and practices. Strong understanding of applicable field of expertise. Strong task management and budgeting skills. Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, problem-solving and negotiation skills. Demonstrated ability to make appropriate decisions regarding day-to-day work activities. Promotes and models ethical and professional interpersonal and business behaviors. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, motivate and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values.

Additional Required QualificationsThe successful candidate must pass a preemployment background check and physical, including behavioral health.Applicants must provide proof of a valid and current license to operate a motor vehicle. Strong working, knowledge of effective leadership practices and ability to apply them to everyday situations.Prior experience in a security-related field such as criminal justice, military, homeland security, corrections, security, EMS, or behavioral health.Knowledge of legal and ethical management issues and practices.Prior supervisory experience (strongly preferred, not required).Ability to effectively train, lead, motivate, and appreciate personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values.Ability to use a variety of workplace technology.Strong understanding of security field of expertise.Strong task management and budgeting skills.Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, problem-solving and negotiation skills.Ability to make appropriate decisions regarding day-to-day work activities.Promote and model ethical and professional interpersonal and business behaviors.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Manager I / Annual Salary Range: $74,900 - $123,600
