Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
CUNY
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
**POSITION DETAILS**
Established in 1961, The Graduate Center serves as the doctoral degree granting institution for the largest public urban university system in the United States. CUNY enrolls more than 269,000 degree-credit students and 247,000 adult, continuing and professional education students at 24 campuses across New York City. With its main campus in midtown Manhattan and state-of-the-art Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) in Harlem, The Graduate Center is widely recognized for its highly ranked programs, world-class faculty, innovative research, affordability, and commitment to advancing knowledge for the public good. More than 2,800 doctoral students and 650 master’s students from around the world are enrolled in The Graduate Center’s 47 degree programs in the humanities, arts, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics and computational sciences. The CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies (CUNY BA) is also based at The Graduate Center.
The Graduate Center is a unique consortium. It is home to approximately 130 core faculty, nearly all of whom are senior scholars and leaders in their disciplines. Additionally, more than 2,000 doctoral faculty from across the CUNY colleges – as well as from metropolitan cultural, academic, and scientific institutions – participate in teaching, mentoring and collaborative research with students at the Graduate Center. While earning their degrees, doctoral and master’s students have the opportunity to teach independently at campuses throughout the CUNY system, making them exceptionally well prepared for academic careers. The 2019 National Science Foundation Survey of Earned Doctorates ranked The Graduate Center #41 out of 375 institutions in the number of doctoral degrees awarded and 13th in the number of doctoral degrees awarded to students who identify as Hispanic or Latino.
Faculty and students are attracted to the more than 30 centers and institutes: among them the ASRC, the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality, the Leon Levy Center for Biography, and the Gotham Center for New York City History. The Teaching and Learning Center and Andrew G. Mellon Foundation supported Futures Initiative provide support for current and future faculty in advancing their pedagogy and implementing instructional technologies to support inclusive student success.
As a member of the senior leadership team and reporting directly to the President, the Provost and Senior Vice President is responsible for all academic affairs, including the academic programs, initiatives and research centers, Student Affairs, Graduate Center Library, Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Research and Sponsored Programs, the CUNY BA and non-degree programming initiatives. The Provost‘s Office comprises the Associate Provost and Dean for Humanities and Social Sciences, Dean for Sciences, Dean for Academic Initiatives and Strategic Innovation, and 12 full-time staff.
In partnership with the Graduate Center president, the provost will have the opportunity to strengthen the education and research enterprise at The Graduate Center, and to shape the scope of public graduate education in transformative ways. Priorities include broadening access to graduate education and advancing inclusive success, evolving the consortium model for graduate education in CUNY, fostering research and efforts to obtain grant funding, and developing innovative academic programs to meet changing workforce needs.
