Cornell’s Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars Program (PSSP); an invitation-only 7-week program designed to help admitted Cornell students prepare for their first year at Cornell. To best support the program, PSSP hires residential staff to oversee about 200 incoming first year students, including Resident Directors (RD), Resident Advisors (RA), and live-in Program Mentors (PM).
The temporary full-time, live-in PSSP Summer Residential Programming Manager
position will manage multiple aspects of the PSSP residential portions of the program through opportunities to engage in supervision and direct student support in an accelerated timeframe to assure a safe, enjoyable experience for the students. Additionally, this position will support the PSSP Assistant Director with supervision and management of the live-in Program Mentors and coordinate with the PMs the weekly programming activities in the residential hall.
The PSSP Summer Residential Programming Manager position requires that staff display professionalism, maturity, positive role modeling behavior, and good judgement. Successful candidates should expect a fast-paced environment where they will be challenged to learn quickly and adapt to varying priorities based on what is occurring within the program. A successful PRM will possess strong customer services skills and a solid work ethic to professionally handle confidential information, effectively problem solve, make informed decisions, enforce policies and mediate potential conflict when dealing with staff, student and families. This supervisory position will involve office hours and on-call responsibilities.
During the summer, incumbents will gain practical experience in campus life, develop leadership abilities, and hone supervision skills, in addition to many other transferable skills that prepare them to excel in any future position in higher education.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required (May 2025 graduates may apply).One year or more of full-time experience working residence life in a college or university setting required.Ability to work varied hours, including nights, weekends and holidays (Juneteenth and Fourth of July) to support the program.Ability to live and work on-campus during the entirety of the programPreferred Qualifications
Current enrollment or master's degree in student Affairs, Higher Ed. Administration, or related program strongly preferred, but not required.Prior experience working with college populations and/or experience working with academically motivated students, preferably in an intensive residential setting.Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.Evidence of cultural competence and inclusiveness; sensitivity to and understanding of diverse perspectives that students and staff bring to their work, including those of academic, socioeconomic, culture, race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and intersectional identities.Knowledge of campus agencies and services to refer studentsTime Commitment
The position will be from June 9, 2025, through August 7, 2025. Selected candidates will be expected to be on campus and complete orientation starting on Monday, June 9, 2025. Compensation includes $8,000.00 (minus applicable taxes) to be paid out equally over the program, a summer meal plan and single room housing within the program’s assigned residence hall.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervision and Staff Development
Support the PSSP AD and effectively build a sense of team and collaboration within the Program Mentor team.Support the live-in staff by attending all relevant training sessions and holding undergraduate staff accountable for engaging in sessions and completing all relevant quizzes and other assessment tools.Hold weekly one-on-one meetings with each direct report which includes: covering resident concerns, successes, feedback, etc., coaching and managing challenging issues of human relations, multiculturalism, mediation and confrontation among students and staff, being sensitive to the developmental needs of the staff and take the initiative to seek out, as appropriate, resources, people, and/or programs that lend support to the staff, and assist PM staff in balancing their priorities during the intensity of the PSSP ProgramServe as the primary point of contact for assigned PMs to address residential issues and to facilitate a residential environment in which all residents are respected and safe.In partnership with the Assistant Director, lead weekly PM staff meetings.Create and manage the PM office hours, night check in desk, and time off schedules for PM staff.Complete an official evaluation, format provided, for each assigned PM.Participant & Program Involvement
Learn about and understand PSSP in which the students are enrolled to better support their success in and out of the classroom.Act as a role model and be decisive, task oriented and fair when interacting with students and undergraduate staff.Assure students' well-being by completing wellness checks and assist students in addressing their concerns through one-on-one or small groups meetings with PMs.Respond to inquiries quickly, thoroughly, and productively to ensure students continue to have confidence and comfort in the program’s ability to support them toward successful completion. Refer parent/guardian/family inquiries to the appropriate supervisor promptly, as needed.Actively participate in area wide and community specific programs and events whenever possible.Be sensitive to the diverse needs of students and undergraduate staff. Foster and promote an inclusive environment for all.Know your own limitations in advising and consult closely with program leadership as needed.Policy Enforcement and Conduct
Firmly and consistently, uphold and enforce the University’s Code of Conduct and PSSP House Rules/Community Standards and ensure that they are adhered to all times by staff and students by addressing conduct and/or behavior immediately according to policies and procedures.Report unsafe, inappropriate, and/or concerning behavior of staff and students to the appropriate departments (PSSP Leadership, Cornell Police Department, RD on call.) Through use of the incident reporting system and assist in the event of a crisis incident.Oversee and carry out the following responsibilities: be accessible via issued on-call phone and email to address issues promptly, and coordinate and adhere to procedures and policies for off-campus trips and approved overnight stays.Administrative and General Duties
