Job Duties

Diagnoses, treats and medically prescribes for inpatients and outpatients within the limits of
privileges; serves as attending physician of record for patients with no private attending.


Admits patients to hospital, becoming attending physician of record for such patients as necessary.

Provides night and weekend on-call coverage; provides weekend and holiday direct patient care
coverage according to established schedule in order to ensure continuation of quality patient care
for the service.

Completes all documentation in patient and medical records in a timely manner, including
assessments, progress notes, discharge summaries and treatment plans.

Educates and counsels patients, families and care givers on medical condition, medications
prescribed, plan of care and follow-up to treatment; participates in discharge planning process as
appropriate.

Participates in and provides leadership to interdisciplinary treatment teams within the assigned
settings.

Participates in consultative services to other departments and divisions, as assigned, and
recommends and/or performs special studies and tests; participates in interpretation of test and
study results.

Supervises, teaches and evaluates residents and medical students rotating through the division as
directed; prepares and delivers subspecialty lectures and conferences; participates in rounds and
performs supervision and didactic teaching, as required.

Assists in managing and conducting training programs; recommends changes in curriculum
structure as appropriate and participates in developing new educational programs.

Supervises and completes evaluations for residents as required; reviews and signs off on resident
charts; performs other chart reviews as directed.

Engages in clinical research and, where applicable, in basic research projects; directs and/or
supervises research fellows, as appropriate; publishes and presents results of research projects in
a timely manner, as directed.

Assists Medical Director in establishing procedures to ensure consistency and quality of all services
provided by the department and/or division; participates in Quality Assurance program in
accordance with the policies of Bergen Regional Medical Center and regulatory agencies.

Attends and participates in hospital and department committees as required by the Medical
Director or Vice President of Behavioral Health.


Works with Medical Director or Vice President of Behavioral Health to develop protocols and
standards of care that are in compliance with requirements of JCAHO and other regulatory
agencies.

Assists Medical Director or Vice President of Behavioral Health in departmental administration as
required; recommends modifications or upgrades to equipment and implementation of new
procedures; prepares reports and analyses as required.


Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance
program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.

Adheres to the Medical Center's policy on Conflict of Interest, which includes completion of a
Conflict-of-Interest Certificate on an annual basis.

Other Job Duties
Participates in community outreach programs of the hospital and division as required.
Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Graduation from an accredited medical school (M.D. or D.O.) plus completion of required residency in Psychiatry. If routinely assigned to the Child Psychiatry Service, should have successfully completed an accredited Child & Adolescent two-year fellowship program.
Board certification in Psychiatry or current active participation in the examination process. Board certified/Board eligible in Psychiatry. (Board eligible physicians are required to sit for and pass their Board examinations at the earliest date possible.)
Evidence of formal, supervised training or clinical experience as required for certain procedures. Valid and unlimited license to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey.
Valid license to prescribe controlled substances (DEA and CDS)

Position Qualifications
Demonstrated experience in Psychiatry as set forth in Psychiatry credentialing requirements.
Technical skills required for psychiatry, including detailed knowledge of psychotropic and non-psychotropic medications, psychiatric interviewing skills, psychotherapeutic skills, and psychiatric diagnostic skills.
Good organizational skills.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Speaks, reads and writes English well.
If performing ECT, must be privileged by the Medical Director.

Mobility required. Manual dexterity.
Exposed to infections, contagious diseases and bloodborne diseases.
Handles emergency or crisis situations.
