Psychiatrist - Part-Time

Job Summary

The Psychiatrist is responsible for the delivery of psychiatric services in the assigned program or region. The Psychiatrist, through professional expertise and credibility, collaborates with peers and provides input into a broad range of issues pertaining to clinical policy and practice, quality of service, and all psychiatric matters required to achieve Hillside’s current mission of providing quality care. The Psychiatrist provides clinical services to children/youth/individuals drawing on a wide range of knowledge, skills and abilities to diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders.

Essential Job functions

Interact productively with referring sources, external treatment centers and care providers to ensure that appropriate placements occur, that collaborative relationships with local providers are maintained and that the interests of children/youth/individuals, families and Hillside are represented effectively. Design individualized care plans, using a variety of treatments supported by sound clinical practice and the available evidence base. Collaborate as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team with physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurse practitioners, nursing staff and other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress  Assess patient data and evaluate findings in order to clarify the presence and significance (impact) of any diagnosable mental disorder(s).  Provide psychiatric therapy (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic) to residential patients as required. Facilitate the admission of residential youth/individuals to hospital settings when acute care is required and follow them during their hospital stay per community standards and best practices; make recommendations on all admissions, transfers and discharges. Maintain primary responsibility for the implementation and monitoring of psychiatric medication therapy, consulting with and informing the youth/individuals, family and other team members about pertinent risks, benefits, concerns, and alternatives. Complete written evaluations and progress notes in a timely manner. Provide collaboration with and consultation to psychiatric nurse practitioners, other Licensed Independent Practitioners (LIPs) and related trainees as assigned, providing teaching, coaching, mentoring and opportunities for growth to improve their skills. Proactively remain up-to date with research and evidence-based practice in the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; participate in research and mentoring of others as needed. Participate in on call responsibilities, as assigned.  Understand and adhere to all federal, state, and local statutes, regulatory agency standards and Hillside policies including but not limited to all federal, state, and local statutes, regulatory agency standards, and Hillside policies, including but not limited to, Office of Mental Health (OMH), Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS), Council on Accreditation (COA) and New York State Education Department (NYSED). While this job description covers many aspects of the role, employees may be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree required. Minimum 3 years of experience practicing psychiatry required. (This requirement may be waived pending due diligence by both the Medical Director and the Executive Director of Health Care Services.)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Medical Doctor with a current, unrestricted, valid NYS License; specialty area in Child Psychiatry required - Board Certified or Board Eligible (BC/BE). Unrestricted, valid NYS driver’s license for minimum of 1 year with a clean driving record and minimum insurance coverage that meets agency standards. Current, unrestricted, valid medical liability insurance commensurate with agency standards. Basic Life Support (BLS) training within 60 days of hire and recertification annually.

This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures. Possesses knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological/behavioral health research methods; and the assessment and treatment of intellectual/developmental disorders, behavioral health disorders and other psychiatric conditions. Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or other approaches to problems. Considers the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one(s). Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintains them over time. Possesses the ability to listen to and to understand information and ideas presented through written and spoken words and sentences. The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions including finding relationships among seemingly unrelated events or ideas.

Must be able to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
