This position is responsible for developing clear and engaging content for the Department's website, social media, newsletters, and publications promoting the Department’s accomplishments in clinical practice, education, training, and research. The Public Information Specialist will work closely with other marketing, communications, and advancement professionals across the School of Medicine (SoM) and UW Medicine to ensure consistent messaging that positions the UW as a leading institution. As such, this individual should have the capability to build and maintain trusted relationships with internal Department members as well as communications and marketing colleagues across SOM and UW. Given the scope of responsibilities, rthis position will report to the Academic Development Manager. **Major duties of this position fall into the following categories:** + External Communications Management & Philanthropy + Internal Communication Oversight + Project Management & Web Governance Committee **POSITION COMPLEXITIES** The Public Information Specialist must have the ability to work in multiple mediums and across multiple digital communications platforms. A high level of organization and ability to manage multiple projects at one time is required. This position will oversee all communication initiatives and be dedicated to continuously improving and enhancing content. This individual requires the ability to tailor communication approaches to different audiences based on the needs and interests of the target demographic. Therefore, excellent writing and communications skills, creative thinking, and the ability to translate scientific content effectively for both technical and non-technical audiences are critical. **POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY** The Department of Anesthesiology and Medicine is nationally and internationally recognized for providing innovative clinical care, supporting groundbreaking research, and fostering comprehensive residency and fellowship training programs. This position serves as a representative of the Department and UW in communications with internal and external individuals and organizations. Communication and promotion of the achievements of the Department to the local community and the public at large reflects positively on the University and serves to enhance potential funding for the Department and UW.APM is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine. Across 8 clinical divisions, our clinicians, staff, and trainees work at 6?University or University-affiliated?clinical sites:?UW Medical Center – Montlake; UW Medical Center – Northwest, Harborview Medical Center,?Seattle Children’s Hospital,?the Veteran's Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System?(VA) and the Fred Hutch Cancer Center.?In addition, our extensive and well-funded APM research is conducted at South?Lake?Union (SLU), Seattle Children’s Research Institute?(SCRI)?, and?at labs in the Health Sciences complex and Harborview.???? **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** External Communications Management & Philanthropy: 60% + Regularly meet with members of the APM executive team to develop a comprehensive communications strategic plan. + Regularly meet with the APM executive team as well as key stakeholders to determine strategy and timeline of fundraising initiatives, and to review key analytics to inform changes to strategies. + Exercise professional discretion in creating written copy and producing content for the department website, social media, and other publications. + Maintain a thorough understanding of emerging communications trends and integrate these practices into strategic initiatives. + Ensure consistency in messaging across platforms. + Follow UW Medicine Web and Marketing standards to ensure the Department remains up to date with the current brand standards. Participate in UW school and UW Medicine forums/meetings to stay abreast of best practices, news standards, and news channels. + Ensure visual and editorial integrity of the department in all public-facing communications, and develop and maintain editorial style guidelines. + Coordinate with the UW Medicine development team to assist with fundraising communications as needed. + Serve as the department’s point of contact for communication with other University communications staff.Internal Communication Oversight: 30% + Create strategies to increase information flow through the department to promote and share APM clinical, research, and education activity + Work with APM leadership on communication strategies around the Department’s mission, vision, and values to increase engagement and retention of faculty, staff, and trainees. + Positively interacts with medical, scientific, public health, and communications professionals within the Department, of UW Medicine and across the University to ensure understanding of communications strategies. + Maintain a thorough understanding of emerging communications trends and integrate these practices into strategic initiatives. + Ensure communications are accessible to all members of the department via electronic platforms including emails, monthly newsletters, and the department website.Project Management & Web Governance Committee (WGC): 10% + Independently manage project timelines, scope, objectives, resources, and budgets, and ensure that changes are being documented throughout the appropriate project workflow. + Lead and manage Web Governance Committee meetings to discuss all deliverables and projects – web content, social media, landing page engagement, etc. + Develop communications success metrics with APM Leadership and share them with the WGC + Report to Vice Chair and Chair recommendations to adjust resources and goals based on quantitative data/analysis and learning from campaigns + Research new communication and philanthropic initiatives that will drive engagement and lend themselves to quantitative metrics. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** + Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing or similar field + Minimum 3 years marketing and/or communications experience with increasing scope and responsibility **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS** + Knowledge and experience with social media platforms, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and other editing software + Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills + Demonstrated ability to write for print/digital media platforms; displays solid editing and proofreading skills + Experience conducting interviews; Exceptional interpersonal skills + Experience working independently and collaboratively as part of a team + Ability to take initiative, set priorities, handle multiple projects, and exercise sound judgment in a dynamic environment in an organized and professional manner + Ability to learn quickly and apply new or unfamiliar technologies + Highly adaptable, able to problem-solve and embrace change + Strong Emotional Intelligence that allows for work with faculty, leadership, and staff **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS** + Demonstrated interest or experience working in healthcare and/or an academic institution and/or non-profit organization + Experience with digital analytics tools for measuring online activity and engagement **Application Process:** The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
