The Public Relations Specialist will contribute to crafting and telling Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s story. This role in the Medical Center Office of News and Communications reports to the Director of Content Strategy and offers an exciting opportunity to innovatively share news of the Medical Center’s world-leading advancements in the fields of medicine and science with patients, members of the news media and VUMC’s workforce of more than 43,000 employees.
The person in this role will be responsible for creating content for multiple uses, especially the VUMC News website and VUMC biannual magazines participating in editorial planning, ideation and story mining meetings; researching, conducting interviews, curating, and publishing content; and shepherding stories through internal and external approvals.
The person in this role will work closely with the entire News and Communications team, along with communications and marketing colleagues throughout the organization, to pursue and articulate the Medical Center’s many amazing stories.
Specifically, we are looking for someone with excellent writing skills, a passion for health care delivery and scientific discovery, a keen eye for identifying compelling story angles that highlight the unique attributes of VUMC and its culture, a collaborative attitude, and the ability to think creatively and receive constructive feedback from a multitude of internal and external stakeholders. Ability to work under tight deadlines and a positive attitude are musts. Must be flexible, adaptable, productive and able to manage multiple writing projects simultaneously.

**How will you make an impact in this role?**
Identify topics and write content for VUMC’s online and print platforms, especially VUMC News.org, that reflects a consistent tone and puts the world-renowned VUMC brand and its core missions at the center of storytelling.
Work in tandem with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including teammates in the Office of News and Communications to story mine and bring compelling narratives to life.
This full-time position with the Medical Center’s Office of News and Communications requires excellent oral and written communications skills, attention to detail, appropriate computer skills and a familiarity with social media platforms. The successful candidate also must possess excellent interpersonal skills and a working familiarity with the news media’s operational processes.
**Responsibilities Include:**
+ Writing articles, magazine features and news releases about medicine, science and health care
+ Responding to requests from news media, members of the law enforcement community and the public about information pertaining to VUMC
+ Updating departmental web sites
+ Working with other staff on editorial or media relations projects
+ Serving in the department’s On Call rotation-which includes night and weekend call responsibilities
+ Other duties as assigned
**Specific Skills Required:**
+ Expertise in news or publications writing and a familiarity with Associated Press (AP) style standards
+ Expertise with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel
+ Familiarity with content management systems such as Wordpress and Photo Shelter
+ Familiarity with multiple social media platforms including Bluesky, X and Facebook
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related discipline and at least two years of relevant work experience. Fundamental knowledge of medicine, health care and science is preferred.
This is a full-time position requiring at least 40 hours a week, M-F, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., participating routinely in the department’s afterhours call rotation and occasionally serving nights and weekends as needed.
