Summary
Responsible for the inspections of public improvement construction of streets, utilities, sidewalks, and drainage for compliance with local, state, and federal code, regulations, and specifications. Inspecting construction activities within all client right of ways and the inspection of private improvements.
Essential Functions and Other Important Duties
Essential Functions:
Inspects and observes construction of public works and infrastructure activities on a daily basis.
Inspects and compares material deliveries to approved materials list and submittals and works with clients to handle any material issues.
Inspects for proper survey and staking.
Performs and/or monitors the testing of backfill or construction materials as required.
inspection of erosion control measures at construction sites during construction
Coordinates and schedules requested inspections.
Monitors the testing of construction materials and works with clients to handle any issues.
Collects and conveys information for approval of needed changes to approved plans.
Obtains proper documentation associated with all changes.
Compiles and maintains detailed project records including daily reports and other documentation as needed.
Assist in providing input during pre-design and at pre-construction meetings.
Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Three years’ experience related to the civil engineering field (i.e. drafting, surveying, utility construction, or construction technology)
OR
One year of college/trade school related to drafting, surveying, utility construction, or related technical curriculum.
OR
Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII) from the American Public Works Association.
OR
Any combination of education, experience, and/or certifications that will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to be an effective Public Works Inspector
Core Competencies:
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers.
Proficient skill in reading and understanding engineering plans and specifications.
Thorough knowledge of construction standards and specifications
Working knowledge of applicable inspection methods, procedures, and techniques
Ability to manage time and schedule daily activities.
Ability to operate and maintain a motor vehicle.
Proficient in the use of computer programs such as Excel, Word, and Outlook
Preferences:
Preference may be given to candidates with following experience:
Prior public works inspection experience
Candidates with an academic curriculum in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or engineering technology.
Conditions of Employment:
Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License
Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check,
Must be able to work some overtime when required.
