Qualitative Researcher
The Health Behavior & Society department is recruiting a **_Qualitative Researcher_** with an interest and expertise in qualitative research methods to support a range of studies focused on substance use and related services. The main purpose of the role is to support and conduct high quality action-oriented qualitative research as part of a collaborative mixed-methods research team. A core focus will be on data dissemination for different audiences, including the production of summary reports, presentations, academic papers, and community-engaged data sharing. The position will also involve data collection, analysis, and other administrative and operational tasks within ongoing projects. Ideal candidates will have a high level of responsibility and independence, have experience in and enthusiasm for qualitative research methods, be knowledgeable about drug use and harm reduction, and be able to interact with diverse populations in a highly professional, compassionate and knowledgeable manner. **Specific Duties & Responsibilities** + Complete relevant training prior to interviews and access to data (e.g. CITI human subjects research, ethics and confidentiality, and trauma-informed community engagement) + Engage and recruit study participants for in-depth interviews, ensuring compliance with protocols and IRB regulations and procedures, including informed consent. + Conduct qualitative interviews related to drug use and specific project aims. Manage interview documentation and data management procedures. + With senior team members, develop data analysis approaches towards specific analysis aims, including coding of interview data in MAXQDA, extracting coded data and developing analytical memos to identify and explore emerging patterns and themes. + Assist in drafting/editing/proof-reading key research findings. + Conduct literature reviews. + Participate in drafting/writing findings for different audiences, including manuscripts and conference abstracts as needed. + Develop and implement processes and products to facilitate community data sharing + Other duties as assigned. + Duties will evolve in response to the progression of data analysis. **Minimum Qualifications** + Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. MPH or MS in relevant field preferred. + Two years of related experience. + Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. **Preferred Qualifications** + Relevant master’s Degree. + Training in and experience of qualitative research methods, including in-depth interviewing, and a range of qualitative data analysis techniques across a project lifecycle. + Analytic agility, curiosity and creativity for exploring and understanding thematic phenomena from textual data. + Knowledge of drug use/injection drug use in the context of health. + Prior work experience with populations who use drugs. Must be sensitive to the nature of the work and the confidentiality of study participants. + Ability to interact sensitively and professionally with study participants, community stakeholders, project team members and other individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds. + Thoughtful and proactive problem-solving abilities + Familiarity with harm reduction approaches to drug use and experience working with vulnerable populations, including people who use and/or inject drugs and/or community stakeholders including front line workers, service providers, first responders, program planners, and decision makers. + Understanding of qualitative research methods across a project lifecycle. + Strong writing skills. + Highly organized. + Five years of related experience.
