Quality Engineer

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Quality Engineer at our Burns Harbor operation.  The Quality Engineer is responsible for supporting the daily quality activities including order setup and review, inspection, testing, ensuring quality system compliance, reduction of waste/non-conforming material and metallurgical product improvement to make the highest quality steel. The ideal candidate will have prior steel industry experience, be self-motivated and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex operations.  

Summary of Responsibilities: 

Provide metallurgical and technical support for product and process improvement through data analysis, problem solving, expertise in area of responsibility, metallurgical and mechanical concepts, and knowledge of customer operations and markets. 

Offer technical support for internal and external customer issues. 

Assist field sales personnel in resolving major quality issues.  

Communicates customer problems to management and workforce regularly.  

Maintain quality design systems and train customer account representatives on order requirements and setup. 

Develop corrective actions and review mill’s quality performance. 

Collaborate with other operational and technical departments to drive results and improve the quality metrics.  

Comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards.   

Perform duties/responsibilities as required by business needs.  

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical or Material Science Engineering or equivalent experience working with metals. 

Three years of previous experience in an industrial, or related environment. 

Knowledge of metallurgical principles and steel defect origins. 

Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access). 

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively within a team-oriented, fast-paced environment. 

Clear and effective communication skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Knowledge of plate products and customer specifications. Five years of previous experience in an industrial, or related environment. Ability to autonomously recognize and resolve issues Strong analytical skills.
