Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America’s premier processors, buyers, sellers, and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds and is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America. FPT is a wholly-owned business of Cleveland-Cliffs and has an immediate opportunity for a Quality Technician on 1st shift at the Pontiac, MI location. The Quality Technician is part of the quality team responsible for ensuring quality of materials and blends. 

Summary of Responsibilities:

Ensure adherence to safety standards including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)Work closely with operations to determine efficient use, storage, processing, and distribution of scrap materialsEvaluate incoming steel product to determine utilization for low copper blendsCoordinate testing with the melt shop, validates quality of blends, and recommends adjustments to the yard(s) as neededProvide guidance or training to yard employees to ensure understanding and successful implementation of any procedure changesAssist operations in the management of quality programs and dataOversee incoming materials at various yards and select samples for quality evaluationResponsible for providing quality data from material suppliersRegularly work with operations management to develop new material blendsVerify chemistry of material using spectrometerOperate fork truck as neededUphold compliance to environmental, safety, state and local requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED and must be at least 18 years of age5+ years experience in a metal processing, manufacturing, or industrial environmentExperience in scrap industry preferredKnowledge of metallurgyComputer experience with Microsoft OfficeAbility to calculate percentages, density, size, volume etc. by applying basic concepts of algebra and geometryGood communication and interpersonal skillsProficient data entry skillsAbility to establish priorities and manage multiple tasks at onceAbility to maintain accurate recordsAbility to follow oral and written communicationAbility to climb ladders or steps to reach objectsWork cooperatively with other employeesMust be able to work in an environment where routinely exposed to dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate and changes in weatherAbility to lift up to 50lbsPre-Employment background, physical, and hair drug screen required
