MITRE is seeking an ambitious and motivated candidate to join MITRE’s Quantum Moonshot project team for an internship in Summer 2024 to work on characterization of quantum memories and photonic devices. The Quantum Moonshot is a dynamic, fast-paced research collaboration between MITRE, MIT, and Sandia National Laboratories working on challenges at the forefront of quantum information science. The intern will have the opportunity to work with researchers on optimization algorithms for designing photonic structures to interface with quantum emitters. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist researchers with hands-on experiments characterizing quantum memories and photonic integrated circuits in our state-of-the-art laboratory in Bedford, MA. Other tasks include detailed data analysis and presenting results to the team, which includes collaborators at MIT and Sandia National Laboratories. The ideal candidate will be an undergraduate with educational background in a technical field, experience with programming (python, C++, or related language), potential experience with a physics modeling software such as COMSOL or Ansys-Lumerical, and curiosity and enthusiasm for learning new skills.
Basic Qualifications
+ Programming experience in Python, Matlab, or C++
+ Experimental laboratory experience
+ Proficiency in data analysis
+ Electricity and Magnetism coursework
+ Excellent communication skills and a collaborative spirit
+ Sustained excellence in academic achievement
Desired Qualifications
+ Must be a student enrolled full-time in an accredited degree-seeking program in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, optics, or a related degree and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship
+ Experience working in an optics lab
+ Experience with COMSOL and/or Ansys-Lumerical
+ Interest in optimization algorithms and machine learning
+ Interest in learning more about quantum information theory
+ Quantum mechanics coursework
+ Demonstrated interest in serving the public
