You Role:

Are you passionate about unifying scientific data and driving next-generation R&D? We’re seeking a Lead R&D Data Steward to model, govern, and optimize complex R&D data across our business units. Collaborating with scientists, engineers, and technical experts, you’ll ensure that our data is accurately structured, securely managed, and AI/ML-ready—enabling breakthroughs in materials discovery and accelerating the digital transformation of R&D processes.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Scientific Data Modeling:

Design and unify complex R&D datasets (e.g., in-situ / in-silico experimental data, analytical data, application data, etc.) into a holistic data modelDefine ontologies, taxonomies, and schemas that embed scientific context and relationshipsWork closely with lab teams to integrate in situ and in silico data from instruments, simulation outputs, and experimental logs

 Data Governance & Compliance:

Establish and enforce governance best practices to protect IP and ensure regulatory complianceDevelop classification and tagging frameworks for sensitive data, maximizing internal sharing while upholding securityChampion data quality and stewardship, setting clear guidelines for metadata, versioning, and lifecycle management

 AI/ML Enablement:

Serve as the architect for AI/ML-driven materials discovery by structuring and enriching data at scaleCollaborate with data science teams to provide domain context for feature engineering and advanced analyticsIdentify and address data gaps that hinder AI/ML models, ensuring robust, high-quality datasets

The preferred location for this role is Carlsbad, CA or Tempe, AZ. Other US EMD Electronics sites may be considered, as well as, fully remote.  

 

This role requires up to 25% travel, both domestic and international.

 

Who You Are 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in STEM (e.g., Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering), with hands-on experience in R&D data modeling or governance. Other disciplines with applicable experience may also be considered.Demonstrated success in defining and delivering complex data models for scientific or R&D environmentsProven data governance background (policy-setting, security, compliance)Track record of cross-functional project management—partnering with scientists, IT, and data teams

 Preferred Qualifications:

3+ years in R&D or scientific data management roles Master’s or Ph.D. with relevant lab or industry experienceFamiliarity with semiconductor or high-tech manufacturing R&D processesProficiency in scripting (Python, R) and data platforms (Palantir Foundry, Snowflake, AWS) for large-scale data ingestion and analyticsExperience defining database schemas, ER diagrams, or using NoSQL in scientific contextsBackground in agile or DevOps practices for research/innovation projectsStrong communication skills to effectively convey complex technical/scientific concepts

Pay Range for this position: $124,000 - $186,000

 

Our ranges are derived from several sources, and largely reliant on relevant industry market data. Should we decide to make an offer, we will consider several factors, including but not limited to your location, skills, experience, career level, and other job-related factors.  This role may offer the following benefits: medical, vision, and dental insurance; life insurance; disability insurance; a 401(k) matching program; paid time off; and paid holidays; among other employee benefits. This role may also be eligible for short-term or long-term incentive compensation, including, but not limited to, cash bonuses.
