R&D Development Engineer

The R&D Development Engineer (Senior Engineer) is needed for refractory metal-based alloy and process development. This position will be based in Newton, Massachusetts reporting to Senior R&D Staff Engineer. You will have the opportunity to: + Develop, coordinate, execute and report on complex/unique development efforts related to tantalum and niobium alloy development and processing + Interact with internal functions (especially production) and external vendors and suppliers to complete R&D projects as necessary + Apply problem solving and process improvement methodologies to current and new tantalum and niobium materials and processes + Use internal capabilities and work with external vendors for processing raw materials to meet and exceed the specifications of our customer and internal standards + Work with designated Sales/Marketing personnel in support of Materion’s tantalum and niobium product lines + Pursue and protect Intellectual Property rights as appropriate REQUIREMENTS: + B.S. or M.S in Material Science / Metallurgical Engineering, or related field. BS Degree with 2+ years of relevant experience. MS Degree with 1+ years of relevant experience + Comprehensive knowledge of metallurgy and materials science, tantalum and niobium preferred + Thorough understanding of physical metallurgy principles + Have basic skills in sample preparation for optical microscopy + Experienced with SEM techniques. EDX and EBSD analysis experience preferred + Knowledge of basic powder metallurgical, melting, and thermo-mechanical processing (e.g. forging, rolling, extrusion, annealing). Vacuum processing experience preferred + Can effectively communicate technical information to both internal and external customers as well as management in Operations, R&D, and Sales & Marketing + Must be able to recommend/propose future R&D efforts based on knowledge and experience + Must be goal oriented and self-directed + Must be able to design and conducting R&D experiments + Have a working knowledge of project management and demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects as team leader and/or team member + Must have effective written and oral communication skills + Must work effectively with internal and external customers + Experience conducting product/process development in an industrial R&D setting The selection of the person to be hired for this position is contingent on the candidate having export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology which comes under the licensing jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of State, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
