R&D Engineer - Machining

The New Product Development team in our Monroe, CT facility is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to execute rapid prototyping and to develop emerging manufacturing technologies. The position supports a small R&D team and core machinery within an established production facility to bring new products to technology readiness. The team services a varied customer base centered around the manufacture of precision components for the semiconductor capital equipment market. The R&D team will realize concept and manufacturing method to bring Ceramic/composite designs from raw powder to nanometer-level-precision products. 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Prepare project plans, execute tasks with support team, track and report deliverables to internal and external stake holders. Utilize Computer Aided Manufacturing software to develop concepts, designs, engineering drawings and optimized CNC programs: CNC program generation (MasterCAM, other) CMM program generation (PC-DIMS, Calyspo) 3D CAD generation (Creo, SolidWorks) Develop and improve machining methods for ceramic-based composite materials (5-axis machine, grind, EDM, laser, advanced threading, other): Conduct machining trials on new materials and document methods for future product manufacture. Identify next gen equipment to meet customer prototype demand and/or to provide a platform for development of improved manufacturing methods. Specify capability, justify cost and purchase where appropriate. Support Design and complementary functions with process flow, tool definitions, and work holding concepts. Support Customer prototyping activities with costing, process documentation, tracking, and generation of customer updates. Interface with outside entities (customers, tooling suppliers, equipment vendors, toll manufacturers, and test labs). Transfer successful products and processes to Manufacturing, including writing standard work instructions, training manufacturing personnel, specifying equipment, and monitoring results.  Supervise lower level engineers and technicians Continuous improvement via participation in Lean/Kaizen, ISO, 8D and other related activities

Education & Experience

BS in Engineering (or equivalent training, experience and education) 5+ years of experience in advanced machining field Demonstrated program management capability (ability to organize and manage multiple projects through completion) Demonstrated supervisory experience in process and product development environment

Skills

Experience machining of advanced materials (ceramics, metal matrix composites, other) Broad experience with machining methods, including milling, turning, diamond grinding, EDM, laser and other Advanced knowledge of design software, e.g., CAD (Creo, SolidWorks, other), CAM (MasterCam, SurfCam, GibbsCam, other), and CMM (PC-DIMS, Calyspo) Aptitude for external interfacing with both vendors and customers Ability to excel in a cross-organizational, cross cultural, global team environment Role model for Quality, Customer Satisfaction, Employee Satisfaction and Business Results

Working Conditions

Position requires on-site activities for prototype fabrication (this is not a work from home position)
Work schedule is 5 days, 40 hrs per week
 

Physical Requirements

Hands-on, lab-based job environment:

Required to frequently lift/push/pull a minimum of 35 lbs Must be able to sit, bend, squat and walk about facility Depending on project assignment, may be required to walk/stand for entire 8 hour day
