Internship Location: St. Paul, MN.

Position Overview:

The R&D intern would have the responsibility of conducting guided research under other scientists on the team. The intern will be assigned a project that will help support the North America’s Insulating Glass and Windows business. This will involve scouting new raw materials for development projects, formulating, process engineering, and classification of window products. The intern will be exposed to various adhesive technologies and test methods. 

 

Primary Duties:

Working with and analyzing various adhesives and sealants and defining their properties. Some of these properties include viscosity, mechanical strength, adhesion, and open time, with an emphasis on connecting raw material properties to finished good characteristics.

The intern will also be responsible for reading and understanding standard test methods, such as ASTMs, and how these standards apply to our sealants.

The intern may also be responsible for creating and establishing a new internal test method as time allows. 

 

Required Qualifications:

College student enrolled in an accredited 4 or 5-year science or engineering program majoring in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a similar field. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:   

Has a basic understanding of polymer/organic chemistry 

Understanding of statistical tools such as ANOVA, Gage R&R, and Design of Experiments 

Experience in mechanical testing and failure mode characterization 

Understanding of structure-property relationships of polymers, such as molecular weight and viscosity, softening point, and functionality 

An eagerness to learn 

Strong oral communication/teamwork 

Safety-first minded 

Ability to read, understand and apply standard test documents to the lab environment 

Physical Environment: Intern would primarily be working in a laboratory environment handling both hazardous and non-hazardous materials and working with laboratory instrumentation. Interns will occasionally be using analytical equipment and physical testing equipment. There will be short-term lifting, including 50 lb. containers. Interns may also visit a manufacturing site. 

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, and geographic location.

The salary for this role is $22-$25 per hour based on major.
