BD Technologies and Innovation proudly offers a Summer Internship Program for active undergraduate and graduate students. Through this program, the student will have the chance to gain real-world experience in research and development in the medical device industry.
Selected students will be immersed in the design and development process to build top selling medical device products for various global markets. The summer internship program at BD is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience at one of the top medical device companies while advancing the world of health.
Each intern will have an individual project and the opportunity to develop technical engineering and scientific expertise. Through our summer internship, intern students develop an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a scientific and engineering environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver presentations showcasing their work.
We are recruiting for a highly driven engineering/science students with a passion for technology and product development. The candidate is responsible for all relocation, housing, and transportation costs.
Project Area: Digital Engineering – Simulation and Testing
Applicable Majors: Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related
The Digital Engineering Simulation and Testing Team supports BD R&D worldwide by conducting physics-based analyses that deliver meaningful information to multi-disciplinary teams and solve challenging engineering problems. Both computational (in silico) and experimental investigations are leveraged to assess and improve concept/product performance on high impact projects. Team attributes include a collaborative mindset, technical competency, positive outlook, and working through ambiguity. Team members are expected to work alongside each other while also making individual contributions to their respective projects and tasks.
Candidates are expected to have an interest in structural mechanics or fluid dynamics with strong engineering fundamentals that can be applied to multiple scenarios. Exposure to ABAQUS, ANSYS Fluent, SolidWorks, LabView, and a scientific programming language (e.g., MATLAB or Python) is preferred.
Project examples: Work closely with a team of multidisciplinary engineers and use experimental and computational skillsets to conduct technical work applicable to multiple products and projects in the BDX R&D portfolio:
Perform in silico and experimental investigations on new or existing BD products to provide useful insight into the design performance
Conduct experiments on structural or fluidic case studies representative of medical devices and diagnostic instruments that will support validations of in silico analyses.
Design custom experimental geometries and scenarios that are relevant to the medical device field and can be fabricated with the in-house prototyping teams
Perform mechanical testing on synthetic materials or biological tissue/fluids
Process and clean data from mechanical testing for use in characterizing synthetic materials or biological tissue/fluids
Calibrate nonlinear constitutive (structural material or fluidic) models to experimental data for use within physics-based in silico analyses
Perform literature reviews to identify mechanical properties of tissue/fluids for use implementation within in silico analyses
Conduct benchtop fluid dynamics experiments with a LabView controlled measurement system of flows through internal conduits representative of medical devices and diagnostic instruments.
Develop and implement fundamental LabView measurement system capabilities
Practicing and implementing different forms of Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification on medical device case studies
Conducting in-silico design of experiments around conditions relevant to the medical device field and use data analysis techniques to identify important trade-offs and key relationships
Qualifications:
