R&D Product Engineer

Team Summary
This position will support the R&D and Innovation function within GAF’s Nonwovens organization. GAF’s Nonwovens organization produces one of the most critical components enabling our Residential Roofing partners to manufacture the highest quality shingles in the industry. Job Summary
We are seeking a Product Engineer to join our R&D team. You will work as part of a collaborative R&D team focusing on developing innovative solutions for the Nonwoven's network. The role will interface with several key business functions including glass mat operations, shingle manufacturing operations, technical teams, and procurement. The work will include identifying development opportunities through patent research, customer insights, and plant floor experience. In addition, this role provides technical R&D process support across the Nonwovens network to drive and exceed mat product performance goals.

Essential Duties

Ability to gather and understand customer insights and translate them into meaningful solution development opportunities.Utilize customer insights and product requirements to drive the development of new or improved glass mat products.Identify customer product requirements for glass mat materials and translate them into finished product requirements.Perform analyses, tests, and development of new or updated product designs that require an intermediate understanding of nonwoven glass mat materials, chemistries, and product lines.Adjust product designs and formulations, assist with raw material evaluation and selection, pilot new tests, and assist with developing and scaling new product designs.Complete field “fitness for use” technical application tests of products to validate product/formulation changes/recommendations.Serve as a team member for complex projects and support product development, quality control, manufacturing processes, and other operations.Be a key contributor within cross-functional teams across R&D, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing to quickly move from the lab to commercial scale.Produce timely project updates, develop presentations, and report out to internal and external stakeholders. Publish technical reports and conduct presentations on key projects regularly.Lead and support the process/chemistry innovation and improvements to ensure glass mat meets and exceeds customer requirements (FFU’s - Fitness for Use).Provide plant and business support on projects and activities through the application of process modification and/or new raw materials.Drive consistency and optimization of finished Mat properties while working alongside roofing customers to achieve them.Develop and lead Best Practices development and sharing.


Qualifications Required

Bachelor’s Degree technical field is required, preferably in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
Required5+ years of industrial chemical or mechanical engineering experience.5+ years of product development.Technical Plant process support experience.Experience with Nonwovens preferably glass fiber nonwovens.Domestic travel is required (30%).
