Hexcel is currently seeking a R&T Carbon Fiber Engineer for our Salt Lake City, UT, USA location. This position involves development of advanced carbon fiber processes and new products, with an emphasis on scaleup of products from the research scale through the pilot scale and into production.  Position also requires supervision and oversight of the pilot-scale carbon fiber manufacturing line.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

Oversight of a pilot-scale carbon fiber manufacturing line, including:Directing pilot line technicians in their day-to-day responsibilitiesEnsuring the smooth running and maintenance of the line as needed.Managing the schedule of the pilot line resources to maximize utilization.Identify and implement projects to upgrade existing capabilities.Work in tandem with other scientists and engineers in the scale-up of novel products and processes into pilot scale and beyond.Use statistical and engineering tools (e.g., SPC, process control) to troubleshoot pilot and manufacturing scale challenges as they arise and provide solutions.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or related field, with 3-7 years of experience in an industrial setting.  Preference is given to candidates with fiber processing or industrial scaleup experience.Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional and scientific journals, general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, technical methods, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and suppliers.Ability to apply engineering principles to problems of scale-up.Ability to apply design of experiment concepts to pilot processes.  Ability to perform measurement system analyses on new and existing industrial processes and tests to evaluate their capability.Ability to work cross-functionally to ensure operability of an industrial line, switching between operating modes while ensuring high data quality.Ability to independently apply and implement mathematical methods for interpretation and manipulation of analytical data. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.Ability to apply scientific methods and judgment to completion of assignments or directions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Ability to deal with problems involving tangible and intangible factors in standardized and non-standardized assignments and situations.  Ability to think creatively under technical constraint to utilize existing equipment in new ways to meet research needs.
