R&TD Engineer II
Summary

The ideal candidate would have background in electrical and/or computer engineering, along with expertise in coding, analytics and AI. Performs research, design, and development activities to improve NYPA’s energy services.  Designs, selects, tests, evaluates and implements new technology. Ensures that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness and performance are met throughout all engineering activities.

 

Responsible for developing new, highly technical, and innovative ideas, tools, and techniques that have the potential to reduce NYPA’s operation and maintenance costs and increase NYPA’s power systems’ efficiency, reliability, and safety. This includes working with NYPA’s internal constituencies as well as external research and development organizations to develop, implement, test, and evaluate the efficacy of new technologies, tools, and techniques. #LI-VB1

 

Responsibilities Electrical – Prepare the design, and implement advanced generation and transmission technologies at NYPA facilities including, but not limited to, synchrophasor measurements, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), dynamic line rating, advanced closed loop controls, settlingless protection, and unmanned aerial vehicles and robotic inspection for transmission lines.] Implement innovative technology projects at NYPA sites and customer locations by specifying technical request for proposals and supervising contractors to procure and install equipment and demonstrate new technology solutions. Review technical input and guidance to NYPA facilities in generation and transmission technologies, and energy storage through research and industry collaboration. Provide original research on technical solutions to resolve generation and transmission problems at NYPA’s facilities Obtain project co-funding by forming multidisciplinary teams to solicit, prepare and manage grant and cost share agreements to reduce program costs and build stakeholder support Participate  on industry committees and industry groups by preparing reports and presentations and coordinating project collaboration to leverage industry knowledge for NYPA and customer benefits. Implement new technologies by leveraging in house technical expertise with industry knowledge and experience to provide technology solutions to NYPA’s core business and its customers Prepare  budget proposals, project scheduling and project reporting. Keep abreast of the latest technological developments, products and revisions in the electric utility industry. Maintain access and exposure to the latest technology developments and products, analytical and computer simulation tools and processes through research and industry contacts for the benefit of NYPA and customer core activities Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Demonstrated high level of personal motivation, foresight and good judgment.  Ability to influence others.    Able to take a leadership role on less critical projects. Strong project management skills and a team oriented approach are required to plan, execute and complete multiple projects on time and within budget.  Able to develop project plans, timelines and work schedules as well as coordinate among plant staff, contractors, permitting agencies, etc. Good understanding of NYPA’s policies, operations, procedures and business objectives.  Knowledge of power plant, transmission, and substation electrical equipment and systems. Knowledge of basic financial management procedures and principles.  Proficient with environmental and safety power plant requirements. Personal computing skills, including familiarity with spreadsheets, word processors, databases, and project management software. Experience in analyzing complex power system phenomena. Working knowledge of data acquisition and remote monitoring systems.  Experience with GPS synchronized phasor measurement units.  Ability to further develop an understanding of the electric utility industry.  Technical knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines.  Understanding of the Authority’s interaction with other utilities, regulatory agencies and customers.  Background experience with engineering consultants and labor contractors. Project management skills are essential Excellent interpersonal skills; good written and verbal communication skills; possess the ability to organize information and effectively present ideas to the intended audience.  Education, Experience and Certifications Bachelor’s degree in related Engineering field is required.  An M.S. or Ph.D. is preferred. Minimum of seven (7) years of applicable experience, less with an advanced degree, an electric utility, power producer, research organization, manufacturer, consultant or energy services company preferred. PE license or a Phd in the hiring discipline is desirable. For a PE License, it is desirable that the incumbent have the qualifications to sit for Part I and/or Part II of the PE exam. Physical Requirements Approximately 10% travel primarily within NY State Ability to observe and direct work in the field at customer facilities, power plants, under transmission lines, and in transmission substations. Valid driver’s license.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $110,620.00 - $152,090.00. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
