This position is responsible for operating trains that carry freight. Operating automated systems that propel trains, add or remove cars, or switch cars around to unload freight.
Responsibilities Receive and transmit information by radio and telephoneRead and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch listsAssist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches.Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety.Operate locomotive equipmentProperly line switches for railcar movementOperate railcar equipment such as air hoses and handbrakesComprehend color and/or hand signals and systemsQuickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positionsQuickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to visual symbols, signals and displays (sound, light, picture, etc)Must have the ability to communicate clearly, listen and understand information through spoken words and sentences to ensure full comprehension of job duties, safety regulations, and other situations that may require an immediate responseWill require night, weekend, holiday, and/or overtime work based on the job site's operation scheduleOther duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or upper management Qualifications Valid driver’s license requiredAt least two years of verifiable mechanical experienceGeneral knowledge of construction site and equipmentExperience operating heavy equipmentPrevious work-related skill, knowledge and/or experience preferredExcellent communication and organizational skillsKnowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in ash management, structural fills and landfills preferredKnowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance preferredHigh school diploma or equivalent preferred Work Environment & Conditions This position requires a flexible work schedule: nights, weekends, holidays, and/or overtimeMust be able to climb, maintain body equilibrium, reach, grasp, bend and walk/stand/sit for extended periods of timeMust be able to display eye to hand coordination; depth perception required.Must be able to manipulate small parts with hands.
