Rail Logistics Specialist

Compass Minerals operates 12 production and packaging facilities with nearly 2,000 employees throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K. Visit compassminerals.com for more information about the company and its products. **Summary** This role is responsible for providing daily support for rail operations for North America which encompasses the movement of railroad supplied cars and the management of a private fleet. Daily support for rail operations includes managing rail car flows in/out of plants, in/out of storage, handling customer inquiries, processing rail equipment transactions, and collaborating with sales, planning and plant team members. The Rail Logistics Specialist will provide back up for the Rail Logistics Manager to ensure daily coverage. **Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to the following:** _(Management reserves the right to add or modify the duties and responsibilities at any time.)_ + Manage car movements to/from storage, diversions, maintenance, overages, claims and other atypical car flows such as bad orders, mis-routes & expedited cars. + Process rail invoices for all spend categories ensuring timely payment of invoices. + Back up to Rail Logistics Manager as needed. + Generate an integrated car flow status report daily. + Support track and trace requests. + Acquire rail rates and provide to internal customers. + Point of contact for Rail shipping transaction support on inquiries from plant or customers. + Work with rail site tools to assist in operational tasks. + Provide feedback and participate in quarterly fleet reviews. + Reconcile freight exceptions and process disputes. + Perform other related duties as required. **Qualifications** To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. + Analytical - synthesizes complex or diverse information; collects and researches data; Uses intuition and experience to complement data; designs workflows and procedures + Effective communications skills: able to communicate logistical needs to a cross functional group of people and interact with a wide range of audiences including plants, payroll, railroads, trucking companies, 3rd parties, customer service and logistics. + Problem Solving - able to gather and analyze written and oral information, seek and synthesize information from cross functional roles, and define and implement solutions. + Initiative – takes actions that lead to improved results, working as a role model in work ethic, pursues opportunities with passion. + Attention to Detail - able to accurately and efficient input and record in information. **Education and/or Experience** + Bachelor’s degree. + 4 years of relevant experience may substitute for Bachelor’s degree. + Minimum of 2 years of related experience required. + Related experience may include facilitating shipments, planning transportation operations, forecasting transportation demand, coordinating day-to-day logistics operations, administering movement of goods, etc. + Preference to those with experience in multi-facility manufacturing company using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)/Transportation Management Systems (TMS) applications and/or Logistics, ideally JD Edwards (Oracle) Enterprise One & OTM. + Preference given to candidates with experience working with Class 1 and Short Line carriers. + Must be PC proficient, able to navigate an ERP system efficiently and have intermediate skills in Excel. **Physical Requirements** The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
