Reading Education Post Doc

The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education, along with the UVA School of Education and Human Development, is seeking a Postdoctoral candidate in Reading Education. This position is initially funded for one year, with the possibility of extending for one to two additional years.

The role involves both research in Reading Education and classroom teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Eligible candidates must have earned a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education within the past five years. This is a 12-month position designed as a training opportunity for those pursuing a full-time academic or research career.

The appointee will work under the supervision of a senior faculty member, with opportunities to publish research findings during the training period. The position includes 50% teaching responsibilities in collaboration with the Reading Education program and 50% research, allowing for experience in designing, conducting, and disseminating research alongside a faculty mentor.

Job Duties Include

Teaching supervised by a senior faculty member, and allows the candidate to engage across degree programs, course modality, and course content; courses include in-person undergraduate courses in EHD’s Teacher Preparation program focused on reading development and instruction, including practicum supervision, and online graduate courses in EHD’s Reading Education program courses in the core courses aligned with the Virginia Department of Education’s reading specialist endorsement

Research is supervised by a senior faculty member and allows the candidate to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship. Research collaborations will be with faculty, doctoral students, and staff researchers at Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP). VLP houses several federal grants and state level contracts aimed at the translation of evidence-based literacy practices in classrooms and communities.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: PhD.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Doctoral degree in Reading Education or related field (e.g., Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Curriculum & Instruction.

Experience teaching school-age children with a focus on literacy education. Experience teaching in Higher Education, particularly online courses.

Content expertise in literacy education, particularly evidence-aligned diagnostic and intervention practices.

Proficient with Microsoft Office 360 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), Canvas, Zoom, Qualtrics or similar survey data collection tools, and ability to learn new software quickly and introduce new useful applications and platforms to the team.​

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
