General Summary: The Recovery Surgeon is a licensed physician with experience in organ donation, surgical organ recovery, and organ transplantation, that recovers deceased donor organs for transplantation. P erforms cannulation for abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (A-NRP). This position manages the operative environment in a manner that facilitates the recovery of all suitable organs for transplantation and is consistent with the mission and vision of the organization. Also, this position is instrumental in directing the flow of activity, including donor hospital staff, OPO staff, and others who participate in the recovery process. Collaborates within the organization and with external resources to develop and promote practices that increase the number of deceased donor organs recovered for transplantation. Must be available for a minimum of 20 on-call days per month, including some weekends/holidays. An on-call day is defined as a 24-hour period. Responsible for timely compliance with all Network programs and policies. Duties and Responsibilities: Essential Functions:
+ Performs surgical dissection, removal, and preparation of abdominal organs recovered from deceased donors for transplantation
+ Performs cannulation for abdominal normothermic regional perfusion (A-NRP)
+ Collaborates with the medical director on surgical damage and surgeon credentialing as requested
+ Consult in real-time with Network staff, transplant physicians, and surgeons on the recovery and transplantation of organs
+ Participates in the perfusion and preservation of deceased donor organs for transplant
+ Monitors the intraoperative management of organ donors
+ Supervision of surgical first assist, preservation, perfusion, or other organ recovery support staff
+ Maintains a working knowledge of pulsatile preservation and places kidney(s) and other non-renal organs on preservation machines as needed
+ Participates in clinical staff training and education on the organ recovery process
+ Maintains donor and recipient information confidentiality according to established policies and procedures
+ Aseptically places central lines and arterial lines on donors in the ICU as needed
+ Surgically recovers inguinal lymph nodes in the ICU to provide tissue for pre-surgery tissue typing
+ Attends All Staff, Clinical, Team meetings, and case reviews
+ Performs other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the organization
Education and Experience:
+ Must be a graduate of an accredited medical school and residency program (MD or DO)
+ Fellowship in Abdominal Transplant required
+ Must have an unrestricted/unlimited State of New Jersey Medical License
+ Board certification preferred
+ Experience with Normothermic Regional Perfusion/cannulation preferred
