May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff. The Parks and Recreation Department offers the Summer Youth Program at designated community centers and select school sites in partnership with local area school districts. The Summer Youth Program is offered for youth ages 6 - 12 at school sites and 6 - 14 at community centers. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason. Work Location Locations will vary: community centers in various areas of San Antonio; At the department's discretion, the work location and days/hours may be subject to change. Work Schedule Various Shifts: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Essential Job Functions + Confers with staff, parents, and advisory councils on new activities which will motivate interest and participation. + Conducts classes in various skills/areas and to various age levels, including pre-schoolers. + Implements one or more recreational programs. + Plans activities, presentations, and special events. + Issues and receives any apparatus and equipment used by participants, which occasionally requires lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 15 pounds. + Assists in maintaining attendance reports and other necessary records. + Maintains equipment and facilities. + Accompanies participants to tournaments and contest and occasionally officiates games. + Recruits, trains, and oversees volunteer workers and tournament participants including conducting walking tours of facilities and providing information. + Assists in planning, promoting, conducting, and overseeing recreational activities and special events for all groups of ages. + Assists with regular inventories and ensuring the adequate levels of supplies. + Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required. Job Requirements + High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency). + One (1) year of work experience in recreational activities. + Valid Class "C" Driver's License. + (Employees in the Summer Youth Program who are not required to drive are exempt from this requirement) Preferred Qualifications + Experience with distributing recreation equipment and tracking inventory. + Experience implementing programs in sports, fitness, nature, science, teens, art, and/or education for various ages. + Experience in officiating various sports. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university. + Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities + Knowledge of the specialty field for which hired. + Knowledge of techniques used in organized recreation and social activities for all age groups. + Knowledge of teaching techniques, procedures, and methods. + Knowledge of group activity procedures methods, and techniques. + Ability to develop, organize, and direct the teaching program of specialization. + Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public. + Ability to provide direction to large groups of people during activities. + Ability to organize shows and special events. + Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations. + Working conditions are in both indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
