RecSports Student Assistant - Water Safety Instructor

Job Description:

The Department of Recreational Sports is currently looking for Water Safety Instructors to join our energetic team and inspire Gators to engage in lifelong wellbeing! Water Safety Instructors serve the department by instructing group and private swimming lessons as well as creating an educational, safe, and inviting experience for participants.

Successful candidates will begin work at the start of Summer 2025.

RecSports Team Members Responsibilities

Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants, and guests. Uphold and exceed the expectations of the Cornerstones of RecSports Service: accountability, anticipating needs, attitude, and atmosphere. Demonstrate a desire to learn and apply knowledge as a RecSports ambassador. Take ownership of RecSports facilities and programs by exhibiting a responsible work ethic. Promote and maintain cleanliness and appearance within and surrounding RecSports facilities. Enforce RecSports policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction. Respond to all emergency situations and adhere to established protocol including pre- and post- incident procedures. All RecSports employees are expected to abide by the RecSports Student Staff Code of Conduct that clarifies shared expectations and standards in effort to best serve our patrons, develop each team member, and prepare student employees for future career endeavors. 

RecSports Fall Kick-Off 2025: Tuesday, August 19

Fall Kick-Off is our all-staff event to discuss department-wide updates, facilitate unit training sessions, as well as cultivate community and positive energy within our RecSports team. All RecSports Student Staff are expected to attend and will be paid for their training time. Please mark your calendars as this is mandatory for all staff! In addition, please hold your calendars for August 15-20, 2025 for mandatory unit-specific trainings.

Area Specific Job Responsibilities

Instruct group and private swimming lessons Evaluate participant swimming ability and determine correct swim level Create an educational, safe, and inviting experience for participants Be available as needed to discuss the participant’s course evaluation with the parents/guardians and/or participants Punctually meet all scheduled class times, fully prepared to teach Attend all staff and evaluation meetings as requested Adhere to and enforce all the policies and procedures Complete all necessary planning and paperwork inherent to the class Perform other job-related tasks as assigned Expected Salary:

$15.50/hour

Minimum Requirements:

This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis, up to 20 hours per week.

Contribute 5-8 hours/week, dependent up on lesson schedule (evening and weekend hours) Current Certification in CPR/AED/First Aid or willing to obtain within 30 days Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or willing to obtain before teaching any lessons Complete and maintain UF online certifications in GET803, OOC101, PRV802, ITT102, GET811, YCS800 UF Online Training Certifications are due April 18, 2025 Preferred Qualifications: None Special Instructions to Applicants:
