Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit Facilities Operations has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, student programs, and all academic schools and departments. Services include all aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, utility infrastructure maintenance and operations, business operations, safety, regulatory compliance, project management, and renovations. These duties are conducted for a campus consisting of over 100 buildings totaling 6 million gross square feet on over 275 acres.

The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR) is responsible for providing comprehensive composting, sanitation and recycling services to the University, promoting source reduction of solid waste among its work units, encouraging the procurement of recycled content products, recording amounts and types of University waste disposed and recycled, and maintaining an up to date University solid waste management plan. The OWRR full time staff consists of OWRR supervisor and 4 vehicle/equipment operators. Position Summary This position is responsible for overseeing personnel and procedures of all OWRR activities and services. This position is responsible for OWRR crew leadership in the absence of the OWRR Supervisor. This position must maintain clean and safe conditions in all assigned disposal areas on campus; this includes, but is not limited to, general cleaning of campus trash compactors, dumpster corral areas, loading docks, and exterior waste receptacles on UNCG’s Campus. The primary purpose of this position is the complete the sanitation and recycling route, assist crew in correcting dumpster overflow issues, operate trash/recycling trucks and other fleet vehicles, perform basic maintenance, practice safe working habits, and assist in special events with trash/recycling assistance. This position will make independent decisions on prioritizing and modifying set routes and routines to adjust to changing campus disposal needs.

This position is mandatory as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy. Minimum Qualifications

Key Responsibility Leads recycling/trash collections across campus


Essential Tasks Services electronic waste collection containers, hard-back book collection containers, special bulky waste pickups across campus, scrap metal trailers, and auxiliary waste collection containers across campus autonomously. Sets up and collects special event waste collection containers as needed. Organizes and delivers recyclables to various markets in the region utilizing forklifts, dump trailers, dump trucks and box truck. Ensures trash and recycling routes are completed in a timely manner. This position ensures trash and recycling materials separated properly, removes overflow materials to keep walkway containers clean and ready to accept material. Monitors e-waste collection sites across campus- maintains site cleanliness, removes items from bins and consolidates them into palatalized containers for vendor pickup or market delivery. Monitors pallet collection sites across campus (i.e. retail sites) and consolidates them in the Sink compound for later delivery to pallet recycling vendor.  Monitors dumpster capacity- when the 8yd dumpsters or 30yd open top dumpsters across campus are at capacity the materials are crushed or relocated to another dumpster for later emptying by hauling contractor. Removes items from dumpster that are banned from NC Landfills. Assists in campus logistical support for special events, deliveries, and moves. Utilizes departmental labor-saving equipment to ensure safe and effective transportation of university property. Essential Tasks Assist supervisor in ensuring service of campus compactors and trash chutes- keep compactors and chutes operational, clean and ready for contractor service. Troubleshoot problems with compactors and chutes to prevent and fix operational issues. Communicates directly with supervisor or contractor regarding servicing needs. Perform regular spot checks of Trash/Recycle collection areas. Project and task leadership. Utilize a working knowledge of departmental policies, practices, and procedures to accomplish departmental goals. Prioritizes tasks to be completed after daily inspections of key waste collection areas at beginning of shift. Ready chute containers for contractor pickup. Schedule and carry out regular compactor cleaning routines. Replace broken casters on chute containers as needed. Operates small trucks, equipment necessary to complete work assignments. Key Responsibility Vehicle and Equipment Operation, Inspection, and Maintenance Essential Tasks Performs daily DOT vehicle inspections. Performs immediate maintenance needs such as adding fluids or adjusting tire pressure. Immediately reports to supervisor any safety concerns, mechanical problems, need for repairs, parts or further attention. Transports vehicles and equipment to and from repair shops as needed. Inspects and maintains container locations for cleanliness and correct labels. During the summer months, containers should be power washed as needed. Reports any deficiencies or problems to supervisor. Repairs broken containers as directed by supervisor. Completes monthly PM service that includes basic lubrication of compactor grease fittings. Leads container cleaning efforts around campus to ensure attractive and safe containers for a variety of campus customers to use. Always keeps work area and vehicles clean and organized. Empties truck contents on weekly basis and washes out compactor body in wash bay. Reports need for repairs, parts or supplies to supervisor. Key Responsibility Customer Service
